11/7/20 (Sa.) 10:00 PM – HOW A YOUNG WOMAN STABBED TO DEATH HELPED SOLVE HER OWN MURDER NEARLY 40 YEARS LATER Preview
“48 HOURS” INVESTIGATES IN “MURDER AT THE MALL: THE MICHELLE MARTINKO CASE” Preview
Michelle Martinko was an 18-year-old high school senior who went out to the local mall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Dec. 19, 1979. She was later found dead in her car. The case baffled local police officers for decades, and kept them going through several generations, until they got a break from evidence Martinko left behind.
Jamie Yuccas and 48 HOURS investigate what happened that night and take viewers inside the unrelenting efforts by police to solve the case in “Murder at The Mall: The Michelle Martinko Case” to be broadcast Saturday, Nov. 7 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
As Martinko left the mall that night just days before Christmas, someone snuck up on her as she sat in her car, opened the door and climbed in. Martinko was stabbed and cut 29 times. Investigators looked at those closest to her as possible suspects, and questioned many of her male friends. But friends and family were suspicious of an ex-boyfriend. They say he was possessive of her and investigators learned he was at the mall that night.
The crime scene in the parking lot was gruesome.
“This was a real fight,” says Detective Matt Denlinger. “It looks personal, it’s a lot of stab wounds, it’s overkill.”
Police brought her ex-boyfriend in for questioning but learned that he had an alibi. There was also no hard evidence tying him to the crime.
Over time, leads starting drying up. But police kept at it. The case came alive again in 2005 when blood scrapings from the gearshift of Martinko’s car were sent out for testing. That lab report turned up male DNA – DNA that did not match her old boyfriend, anyone previously interviewed in the case, or anyone in the nationwide database of criminal offenders. It would take another decade – and a new detective. Remarkably, he was the son of one of the original detectives on the case and he landed the big break long sought by his father. He turned to Parabon NanoLabs, which uses genetic genealogy to track DNA from one family member to another. Parabon found a distant relative of the killer.
Investigators then set out to painstakingly build a family tree. One branch of that tree led to three brothers, all of them living nearby. After secretly getting samples from all three, they had a match. Even the police were shocked.
“I was definitely speechless. I’m almost speechless today thinking about it,” Denlinger says.
Then, 39 years to the day after Martinko was murdered, Denlinger using a camera hidden in a coffee mug sat down with suspect Jerry Burns, a married father and businessman, to talk about that fateful night in December 1979 at the Westdale Mall.
    Did investigators have their man?
Something interesting that Burns said to police in that interview also left them wondering about another famous Iowa case.
“I just seen something about Jodi Huisentruit recently …,” Burns told them, randomly mentioning the name of an Iowa news anchor kidnapped near her car in a parking lot in 1995 and never found. There is no evidence that Burns knew the TV reporter, but the mere mention of her name is intriguing.
48 HOURS: “Murder at The Mall: The Michelle Martinko Case” is produced by Alec Sirken, Jamie Stolz and Matthew Goldfarb. Lincoln Farr is the development producer. Ken Blum, Doreen Schechter and Michelle Harris are the editors. Lourdes Aguiar is the senior producer. Nancy Kramer is the executive story editor. Judy Tygard is the executive producer.

At Forrester, Katie tells Ridge that he didn’t really marry Shauna in Vegas; that Shauna is the one who texted Carter, not him. Ridge has a hard time believing that Shauna would do this, but Katie points out that Quinn is behind it. Katie tells Forrester the exact words that she overheard, especially from Quinn. She points out that Brooke is still his wife and that Shaun and Quinn have kept them apart. Also at Forrester, Carter prepares to officiate at Ridge and Shauna’s wedding. Zoe can tell that he’s not too enthusiastic about it. He doesn’t think that Ridge is very invested in the wedding. Zoe praises the fact that the Forresters have so much confidence in Carter to have him marrying them and because they promoted him to COO. She thinks they should celebrate later.

Donna tries to stop Brooke from rushing over to stop the wedding. She wants her to think first about whether Ridge really wants to marry Shauna. Brooke knows that Quinn and Shauna are behind this. She admits that she has no proof, but she knows that Ridge hasn’t been acting like himself. She refuses to let the two women get away with this. Donna is worried that if Brooke rushes over there, that it will be even more painful for her. Brooke goes on and on about how Quinn and Shauna manipulated Ridge. Donna finally agrees that Brooke should go fight for her man. Brooke leaves to do just that.  At home, Eric admires Quinn’s wedding preparations. He tells her that he spoke with Thomas, who checked in on Steffy (who’s doing better). Quinn is glad to hear it and wonders if Eric is any more accepting of Ridge and Shauna’s marriage. Eric admits that if it’s what Ridge wants, then he could do worse. Carter and Zoe show up. When Quinn asks if he has a special ceremony planned, Carter says that he thinks Ridge still loves Brooke and always will. Quinn doesn’t want to hear it and argues about it. Carter agrees that he doesn’t have a problem with officiating. Quinn suggests that Carter and Zoe have a drink on the terrace while they wait. Meanwhile, at Spencer, Flo and Wyatt admire how great each other looks, all dressed up for the wedding. They reminisce about seeing each other at Bikini after all these years and look forward to seeing the happiness on Shauna’s face. Flo gets a little choked up at the idea. Quinn texts Wyatt to ask where he is, so they get ready to go. Wyatt and Flo arrive at the Forrester mansion. Quinn is ecstatic about her friend finally finding happiness. Eric tells her that she looks radiant. Quinn tells them how happy she is and how lucky they both are to be married to Forresters. They all go out to the terrace. Quinn stays behind and looks up at her portrait on the wall. Brooke comes in and tells Shauna that she’s going to stop this wedding.

    Recap written by Suzanne

In the morning, Thomas walks into his living room and tries to see if the mannequin Hope really does talk. He says to himself that he must be crazy and decides to leave, to clear his head. As he touches the doorknow, he hears the Hope doll say, “Thomas…wait! Don’t go!”  He goes back to the mannequin, daring it to talk again, but it doesn’t.  Meanwhile, at Forrester, Zende thinks back to the previous day when Carter and Zoe were leaving for a special evening.  Hope arrives and is happy to see him at work with a good attitude. She wants to go over his designs and wonders where Zoe is, for her input. He says that he doesn’t know. They start talking about his designs.  Thomas comes in and tells them what needs to be fixed. Zende leaves, so Thomas tells Hope that she needs him because of his experience. Hope informs him that she doesn’t want to add someone else into the mix. She’s happy with the team she has now.  Thomas keeps staring at her and seeing the mannequin. She asks why he keeps staring at her. He says that he’s just tired and lonely. He jokes that he should probably get a dog.  As he’s about to leave, he hears Hope say the same thing that he heard the mannequin say.  He asks Hope if she said anything, but she didn’t. He looks worried that he’s losing his mind.

Zoe walks downstairs in Carter’s place wearing only his shirt. He admires her in it. They had a good night together. He hopes they can have more. She’s happy to be served breakfast. He lets on that he’s a great cook, since he’s been a bachelor for a long while.  Zoe tells him that she’s really into him, but she’s not ready to move in yet.  She goes to work. Zende tells her that he was thinking about her.  He sees that his phone never delivered the text he sent to her, telling her not to get together with Carter. He gets upset, realizing that he messed up.  At Spencer, Flo watches Wyatt wheeling and dealing over the phone. She tells him that he’s “cute,” but he only wants to hear that he’s rugged, manly and a ruthless negotiator. Flo says that she’s lucky that he loves her.  They talk about the disaster created by their moms.  Just as Flo wonders how Quinn is doing, Quinn walks in. She chastises Wyatt for giving her the silent treatment. Quinn admits that what happened was her fault.  She tells Wyatt that it’s OK for him to yell at her. He doesn’t know what she was thinking, going back to her old devious ways.  She protests that she just wanted her friend to be as happy as she is. Wyatt gets her to admit that she also wanted Brooke out.

    Days of Our Lives logo

Recap written by Michele and Cheryl

Allie and Nicole panicked when they realized that Henry was gone. Allie realized the repair guy was the one who took him. Orpheus told John how his associate took Marlena’s great grandson. John didn’t think he would be that cruel to take the child. Orpheus told him to call Allie if he didn’t believe her. He called her and she told him what happened to Henry. He asked her if she called the police. Marlena went to Bayview to have Christian released from Bayview. Dr. Morris said it would take time to have him released, but she needed it done immediately. Lucas told Kate how about Allie getting raped. He blamed himself, but she tried to make him feel better. He felt he should have protected her. He thought he could have prevented the entire thing. He was upset that Allie had a constant reminder of the rape because of Henry. Allie told Nicole how she let a stranger in their home during a prison break. Lani showed up to get details about Henry. Eli questioned Ben about whether Clyde came back. Eli wanted to search his place for Clyde. Dr. Morris told Marlena that Christian was better off at Bayview the same way Claire was. She didn’t want her compared to Christian. He wanted to talk with the other board members and get back to her the next day, but she refused to leave. Dr. Morris finally gave in to her, but she said that she took care of everything and needed Christian.

John demanded that Orpheus get Henry. He assured him that Henry would be safe as long as Marlena did what he wanted. Clyde didn’t want to keep babysitting Henry because he wanted to check on Ben. Ben thought Eli was going to find the gun. Kate hoped Allie’s rapist paid for what he did. Lucas told her he didn’t and he let her know it was Tripp who did it. Lani told Allie about everyone involved in the blackout. John wanted to see Henry and Marlena. Orpheus assured him that Henry would be okay as long as Marlena did what he wanted. He told John what he wanted her to do. The doctor brought Christian to Marlena, but he refused to be with her. Ben didn’t want Eli to keep searching his room. Eli told him that Lani got a tip about Clyde being spotted in the area. Lani called Eli to tell him about Clyde taking Allie’s baby. Eli wanted to know if he lied to him and was protecting his father. Christian wanted answers from Marlena about her getting him out of Bayview. She told him about Orpheus’ plan, but he wouldn’t go along with it. Nicole tried to make Allie feel better about Henry being missing. Allie regretted the time she lost with Henry. Ben admitted that Clyde was with him earlier. Eli demanded to know why he did tell him the truth when he was there earlier. Orpheus warned John that there were instructions to kill Henry if something happened to him. He wanted John to give him the gun. Marlena told Christian what happened with Orpheus. Ben felt bad about what he did and hoped nothing happened to Henry. Eli was taking Ben to the station. Kate ran into Clyde at the park and saw him with Henry.

    Recap written by Christine

Kevin told Lily that the article made it hard for Chelsea’s company. Someone tried to break into Victoria’s house while the kids were inside with the nanny, and she and Billy thought it was Adam. Billy wanted to do another article on Adam even though he had no proof of any more wrongdoing by Adam. Victoria urged Billy to let go of the revenge, for his own mental health. Billy contacted Alyssa about a second article, but she had no interest in it. Lily sided with Victoria on the second article. Lily and Billy admitted that they wanted to kiss, but they agreed it’d be a bad idea, because they were co-CEOs and friends. Kevin ran into Adam and gloated about his misfortune. Adam warned that Kevin wouldn’t be cocky for long. Chelsea told Chloe that the last remaining sponsor pulled out of her new fashion line because of the article, stalling Chelsea’s plan for a launch. Chelsea confided that she broke up with Adam. She knew in her head she was better off, but she didn’t feel it in her heart yet. She worried about what to tell Connor, and Chloe offered support. Chelsea had a headache, but she said it was nothing to be concerned about. Adam showed up wanting to talk to Chelsea, but she gave him the brush off and left. Chloe and Adam rehashed the things they did to each other. She felt that he hadn’t changed, and she vowed to make sure Chelsea continued to remember she was too good for him.

Esther threatened to throw Gloria out if she caused trouble for Chloe and Kevin. Gloria retrieved the flash drive from the jar on the shelf where she hidden it, and she put it in a new hiding place, in a box on a table. Kevin overheard Gloria arguing with someone on the phone. He confronted her, and he didn’t believe her explanation, so she got fed up and decided to leave. Kevin was concerned for his mom, but he worried whatever trouble she was in would put Chloe and the kids at risk, so he thought it was best that she go. Gloria left, and she didn’t take the flash drive with her. Victoria asked Chelsea if she tried to break in to see Johnny. Chelsea denied it. Chelsea clarified that she wanted to see Johnny, but she wasn’t trying to take him away from Victoria. Victoria wondered if Adam had tried to break in for Chelsea. Chelsea said she and Adam broke up. Rey spotted the person Adam hired to follow him. Adam arranged to have a new person tail Rey. Billy accused Adam of trying to break into Victoria’s house. Adam denied it. Adam said he’d never hurt Chelsea’s son. Billy’s temper flared and he said Victoria was Johnny’s mother. Chelsea overheard Billy and Adam talking about Delia. Adam said that Billy was harassing him because he couldn’t get over Delia no matter how sorry Adam was and no matter how many times he’d begged forgiveness. Billy warned Adam not to come near his children again.

Recap written by Michele and Cheryl

Marlena wanted to know what Orpheus wanted with her. He didn’t give her any details about his plan with Clyde. John went to Ben’s place to get Marlena, but he let him know that she wasn’t there. Steve and Kayla talked about the blackout. He didn’t want her to be by herself, but she assured him she was fine. He didn’t want her alone with Orpheus, Clyde, and Rolf being on the loose. They also talked about Tripp, and he overheard the end of it. John was upset when Ben told him how Orpheus was on the loose. He demanded to know why he didn’t tell him that already. Ben wondered if Orpheus really had Marlena. He wanted to call the police, but John said he wasn’t calling anyone. Orpheus wanted Marlena to help Christian. She didn’t want to do it because he tried to kill Will. Orpheus told her how Christian was being treated in prison and how he tried to commit suicide. He wanted Marlena to get Christian out of prison. Tripp wanted to know if Steve and Kayla were talking about him and Allie. Clyde pretended to be an electrician to get into Nicole’s apartment. Allie was surprised that Clyde would want to go to her apartment to check the circuit breaker. He managed to convince her that he needed to get inside. John thought Ben could help Marlena. Orpheus wanted Marlena to check Christian out of Bayview. She assured Orpheus that his son was okay. He didn’t believe that. He told her how she was able to get her granddaughter out so she could get his son out of Bayview.

Steve lied to Tripp about asking Kayla to put in a good word for him at medical school. Tripp wondered what would happen if Kayla didn’t believe him. Steve was sure she would believe him. Kayla was waiting for the security guard, but Rolf showed up. Rolf pulled out his gun when he noticed that she looked at her phone. Orpheus warned Marlena that he did something to guarantee that she helped him. John and Ben talked about the breakout. He wanted to know if Clyde already got in touch with him. Ben thought about his last conversation with Clyde. Clyde let Allie think he was about to leave the apartment, but he taped the lock and stayed inside. Marlena panicked because she thought Orpheus had John. He assured him that he took someone else she would care about. Ben told John he didn’t hear from Clyde, but he knew someone who could help. Steve tried to call Kayla, but he didn’t get an answer. Rolf wanted Kayla to get Stefano’s essence back, but she told him it wouldn’t happen. John warned Ben that his father would be collateral damage. He was okay with it if he hurt Marlena. Ben knew that Ciara would give him a hard time if she knew he helped Clyde. He was determined to make Clyde pay if he had something to do with Marlena’s disappearance. John found Oprheus and demanded to know where to find Marlena. He warned John it wasn’t a good idea because he wouldn’t fine Marlena. Allie checked Henry’s crib and discovered he was missing. Clyde had Henry with him in the park.

‘20/20’ Airs Friday, Oct. 30 (9:01-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC
A new “20/20” details the investigation into the dark world of one of the most notorious killers in America and one woman’s relentless determination to bring him to justice. The killer terrorized idyllic California neighborhoods in the 1970s and 1980s, evading authorities as he lived among his victims for over four decades. During his attacks, he talked to his victims and once cried out about a mysterious woman named Bonnie. Was it a tantalizing clue into his motivation? ABC News’ “20/20” reports on bestselling true crime author and web sleuth Michelle McNamara’s obsession with solving the case before her death; and includes interviews with investigators dedicated to the case, including former cold-case investigator Paul Holes who tirelessly tracked him for 24 years, and genetic genealogist Dr. Barbara Rae-Venter who helped crack the case in 2018 using DNA, finally revealing the shocking identity of the monster behind the mask. “20/20” also has emotional, candid interviews with survivors who open up about their attacks, his capture and their lives today. The two-hour program also features rare footage of the killer, extensive archival footage and police files, and reports on the capture and his double life as a husband and father. ABC News’ “20/20” airs Friday, Oct. 30 (9:01-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC.
“20/20” is anchored by David Muir and Amy Robach. David Sloan is senior executive producer. Muriel Pearson is senior producer; and Cari Strassberg, Jonathan Balthaser, Sunny Antrim and Kelley Robinson are producers of this episode.

NORAH O’DONNELL WILL ANCHOR THE SPECIAL, WHICH FEATURES REPORTING BY GAYLE KING, JAMES BROWN, MARIA ELENA SALINAS, ELAINE QUIJANO, JERICKA DUNCAN, MARK STRASSMANN AND JONATHAN VIGLIOTTI
      Friday, Oct. 30, 9:00 PM
As the presidential election nears, CBS News journalists will report from around the country on the diverse and changing voices who will ultimately choose who the next president will be, in THE DECIDERS, a one-hour primetime special to be broadcast Friday, Oct. 30 (9:00-10:00 PM) on the CBS Television Network.
CBS EVENING NEWS anchor and managing editor Norah O’Donnell will anchor THE DECIDERS. The special features the reporting of CBS THIS MORNING co-host Gayle King, CBS News special correspondent James Brown, CBS News contributor Maria Elena Salinas, CBSN anchor Elaine Quijano, CBS News national correspondent Jericka Duncan and CBS News correspondents Mark Strassmann and Jonathan Vigliotti.
“This election has been called the most important in modern history,” says Alvin Patrick, executive producer of THE DECIDERS. “Lawn signs and social media posts don’t decide elections. People do. We are talking with voters from around the country to find out who they will choose as the next president and why.”
THE DECIDERS will explore who makes up the voting blocs around the country and their potential influence in the election outcome. This election promises to have a record turnout. Will one of the voting blocs break out and really make an impact on who becomes the next president of the United States?
Here are a sample of the reports:
CBS THIS MORNING co-host Gayle King profiles white female voters, including an ardent Trump supporter in Texas, a Connecticut woman who regrets her Trump vote in 2016 and an elusive undecided voter in Florida.
CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann looks at white male voters who traditionally lean Republican, including some who are feeling buyer’s remorse after the devastating health and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
CBS News special correspondent James Brown reports on the traditionally Democratic-leaning Black vote, but also looks into the slight uptick in support for Donald Trump among Black men.
CBS News contributor Maria Elena Salinas talks with Latino Americans – a rapidly growing demographic – in Florida and Arizona where political views are varied and diverse, and may play into the outcome of the election.
CBSN anchor Elaine Quijano reports on the growing Asian American voting power and profiles a pro-Trump business owner as well as other voters who support Biden in Wisconsin and Nevada.
CBS News correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti explores the LGTBQ voting bloc which includes voters concerned about issues like adoptions and transgender rights.
CBS News national correspondent Jericka Duncan profiles young voters on opposite sides of the country and on opposing sides of the political debate.
THE DECIDERS is from CBS News’ Race and Culture Unit. Kim Godwin is the senior executive producer of THE DECIDERS. Alvin Patrick and Mitch Weitzner are the executive producers. Susan Zirinsky is president and senior executive producer of CBS News.

Belle was creeped out because she had to be at the house by herself when Jan showed up. Jan said she had something for her and reached in her pocketbook. Clyde told Ben how he didn’t answer him about going with him. Ben didn’t want to leave because he wanted to get revenge on Vincent. He wanted him to feel the pain he felt. Sarah talked to Philip about Xander when he showed up and saw them together. Jan had an object and Belle thought she was about to hit her with it. Jan let her know she had a crystal for Claire, but Belle didn’t want it. She wanted her to go. Sarah couldn’t believe Xander was upset to see her talking to Philip. Sarah tried to explain why they were talking to each other. Clyde told Ben how he was the only family he had left and that’s why he was there. Jan wanted to make sure Claire got her gift. Belle told her that she would give it to her, but she didn’t believe her. She thought Belle was jealous of her relationship with Claire. She thought she was too old to be friends with Claire. Jan thought her relationship with Philip was inappropriate. Clyde tried to convince not to kill Vincent, but Ben snapped and said he was why Ciara was dead. Clyde told him to live the life he was meant to live.

She thought Jan lied about having a gift for Claire, but she said she did have a gift for her. Belle told her how Shawn would never love her. She kept pushing Jan until she snapped and raised the crystal over her head. Shawn showed up while Jan had the crystal in the air. He demanded to know why Jan was in his house. She explained why she was there. Clyde told Ben that Ciara would be mad at him if she knew what he was doing with the gun. He told him to move on with his life. Ben couldn’t believe he was lecturing him. He wanted to know what he was doing, but he wouldn’t tell him. Sarah told Xander that she was going to sleep on the couch if he had to be in the room. Primetime DVD Review: “DC’s Stargirl: The Complete First Season” (Blu-ray + Digital Copy)

    DVD Review!

DC's Stargirl: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray + Digital Copy) DVD cover

“DC’s Stargirl: The Complete First Season” Review by Suzanne 9/25/20

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this post. The opinions I share are my own.

I never miss an episode of this show. It’s a fun teen superhero show. At first, I thought it was interesting but a bit pedestrian, but it got better as the season went along.  This show is definitely aimed at teens more than the other superhero shows. It’s a little more light and fun than those other shows. Which is not to say that the stakes aren’t just as high.

This is the original season, so it was fun to watch them put together the JSA. The only thing I don’t like is that all of their powers seem to come from objects. I guess it was the only way they could find a way to write teenagers with powers. It would be too coincidental if they all just happened to live in the same town.

The first JSA comics were written in the 40’s, so they were probably wise to update them.  Part of me, though would have loved to have seen a JSA series based on the same ones we saw in “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” with Patrick J. Adams as Hourman.  I used to read about the JSA when I was a kid. This TV show, “Stargirl” is based on a comic book from the 90’s, which is very different.

If you like superheroes, or you have children who like them, you should buy this DVD.  There are no special features on the DVD, though. Perhaps because of coronavirus…a lot of the DVD’s I’m seeing now are lacking in extras. I read that the versions of the show that aired on The CW are shorter than the ones that aired on DC Universe. You would think that would make for an interesting feature.

“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels – Season One” Review by Suzanne 9/25/20

This show was created by the same writer, John Logan, who created the original “Penny Dreadful” series on Showtime. Fans of that show will be disappointed in this new series because it’s not as supernatural and not as good. The acting is very good, and it’s filmed beautifully. The story is a bit of a mess, though. There are just too many characters and many different things going on, which makes it confusing.

I’m not saying it’s not worth watching — Nathan Lane alone is a reason to watch — but just don’t expect it to be as good as the original series. Also, Showtime canceled it, so there won’t be any more episodes. That’s too bad because Logan created a good time and place for us to enjoy. Perhaps season 2 would have been better.

Primetime DVD Review: “Star Trek: Picard – Season One” (Blu-ray)

    DVD Review!

Star Trek: Picard - Season One DVD cover

“Star Trek: Picard – Season One DVD cover” Review by Suzanne 10/1/20

I love this show. I’ve been a Trekkie since I was a little girl, growing up in the 60’s with the original “Star Trek.”  However, that doesn’t mean I’ll automatically love anything that they put forth with the name “Star Trek” on it. Having Patrick Stewart star in it definitely gives it more credibility, though.  Unlike “Star Trek: Discovery,” which took me a few episodes to really get into or like, this one grabbed me right away. I wasn’t too fond of the new Star Trek movies with Chris Pine, either (although the last one wasn’t bad). They did everything right: They came up with a great story; they brought back some other old characters we know; they put in a lot of action, but they still had those great Picard speeches that we all loved in “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

You don’t have to be a fan of Trek or have watched any of the shows to enjoy this series (although it does help).  The writing is really good and will draw you in.

I can’t wait for season 2. The DVD is great. It has over 2 hours of special features. Most of them are great fun to watch. Any Star Trek fan should love this show and this DVD. Anyone who doesn’t love it is either lying, or they’re just too picky to deal with.
