Brady said she could die if he didn’t. He told her not to let Philip drag her down. She said like he did. Brady said he dragged her down with him when he was on drugs. Maggie told Philip that she wouldn’t tell Victor for now. Philip said he could handle it himself. Sarah said she went to Rafe and told him what was going on. Steffy: Yeah, you thought it was Hope but it wasn’t?

Primetime DVD Review: “Doom Patrol: The Complete Second Season”

DVD Review!

Doom Patrol: The Complete Second Season [Blu-ray] DVD cover

“Doom Patrol: The Complete Second Season [Blu-ray] ” Review by Suzanne 1/23/21

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this post. The opinions I share are my own.

I love this series. I grew up reading the “Doom Patrol” comic books. I love superhero shows, and the actors do a fabulous job. I’m very glad to have this on DVD because I never seem to have the time to watch it otherwise. The second season is just as good as the first, in my opinion. The characters, having vanguished the villain Mr. Nobody in season 1, now have plenty to do in season 2 as they battle their own inner demons as well as the real-life bad guys.  They do a wonderful job of bringing the comic book to life.

Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger because of the pandemic (there was supposed to be one more episode); there are 9 episodes total.  The show was renewed for season 3 and has already started filming. Hopefully, it will return later this year. It airs now on HBO Max, since DC Universe no longer shows TV shows.

Any comic book fan should love this series.  It’s great drama, tragedy, action and quite a bit of humor as well.

The special features include “Doom Patrol: The Magic of Makeup” and “Doom Patrol Season 2: Come Visit Georgia PSA.”  The first feature is very cool and shows how some of the makeup gets done for the show. The second feature is really boring, but it’s short. I wish they had more extras.

DVD Review!

Snowpiercer: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray] DVD cover

“Snowpiercer: The Complete First Season (BD + Digital) [Blu-ray]” Review by Suzanne 1/23/21

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this post. The opinions I share are my own.

In case you didn’t know, this is the TV version of the 2013 movie “Snowpiercer” starring Chris Evans (which was adapted from a book). It takes place in the future, after mankind, in trying to fix climate change, froze the earth. The rich people got together and built a massive train just for them and their families. However, many regular people forced their way on board with them before the train started up.  Now the people at the back of the train (the Tailies) are poor and starving, while the rich people live in the rest of the train, sectioned off from the rest.  The Tailies want to rebel and overtake the rest of the train, but the rich people try to keep the ecological balance of their part of the train and enforce their privacy with a security force.  They occasionally bring Tailies into the front part to work as maintenance, security and other menial tasks.

I never saw the original “Snowpiercer” movie, so I can’t compare the TNT series to that. I was reluctant to watch either because I had read what they were about, and I’m not a big fan of post-apocalyptic or dystopian movies/shows. They’re usually lacking in hope; everything is dark, dirty and depressing.  I love scifi, but I was raised on “Star Trek,” where everything is clean and hopeful.

However, they sent me the DVD to review, so I had to watch it. It’s not bad.  Things are bad for humanity in this show, but they’re not hopeless. There is a lot of violence, but they do have some nice moments to balance it a bit. It is a very intense show that keeps you watching.

It’s compelling drama as long as you ignore how ridiculous parts of it are. I don’t know about the movie, but it seems to me that without the Tailies, the rich people wouldn’t have anyone to do the manual labor (unless they already had brought on their favorite nannies and other staff). How do you build a track or train that long, and what happens if part of the tracks deteriorate or freeze over? What happens if other things go wrong mechanically on the train. I’m sure that in real life, they have maintenance crews to fix things. It doesn’t make a lot of sense as to why they would build a train to just go around and around on the ice planet, especially when they could have built a city instead, or a spaceship. Why a moving train at all? No one appears to have guns, so either they were outlawed or the rich people didn’t think they would need them, I guess. If they weren’t expecting people to jump on the train, then how do the security guards have all these fancy uniforms?

The show’s two main stars are Daveed Diggs of “Hamilton” fame (Andre Layton) and movie star Jennifer Connelly (Melanie Cavill).  You’ll no doubt recognize other familiar faces in the show, such as Mike O’Malley (“Glee,” “Yes, Dear”), Alison Wright (“Castle Rock”) or Sheila Vand (“Undone”).  Sean Bean joins the show in the 2nd season. Lyaton is the show’s hero from the Tail. He’s brought up to the front of the train to solve a murder because he was a former police detective in Detroit.  He’s forced to help the rich people, even though he doesn’t want to.  Connelly is the heroine (of sorts) who helps run the train and keep the status quo.  She and Diggs have a lot of chemistry.

The movie is, of course, about class warfare. It’s made even clearer by the fact that the rich people are all white or Asian, and the tailies tend to have more black people.  The tailies live in the dark, with no windows, and no creature comforts (I gather they’re back with the luggage? I wonder what happened to all the rich people’s luggage?). Everything looks dirty and raggedy.  The front part of the train is very clean, white and beautiful. They seem to have everything one could want. The show is set 7 years after the train started, and I believe the movie was set later than that. I supposed that makes it a prequel.

There are only 10 episodes, so there are only two disks. There are many bonus features, including an Overview of the show; a segment called Class Warfare; a behind-the-scenes interview with the two main stars; a feature about the train itself; and a segment called “Behind the Curtain: Art of the Frozen World” which focuses the Hollywood magic they use to make the cold parts of the show.  It’s a good show to binge-watch, along with the extras.

Recap written by Suzanne

Ben sees Allie sitting on a bench in the Horton Square, by herself, looking sad. He asks her how she’s doing after explaining that he heard about what Charlie did to her. She opens up to him about how she’s feeling. Meanwhile, Claire is walking when Charlie sees her and asks her not to believe all the terrible things people are saying about her. She tells him off for everything he’s done. Ben sees them and tells Charlie to leave her alone.

Kate arrives at DiMera to see Gabi kissing Jake. Jake swears that it wasn’t what it looked like. Gabi and Kate yell at each other. Gabi brings up Kate’s past, so Kate does the same. Gabi leaves in a huff. Kate tells Jake she knows that this was all Gabi, not him. At Jack and Jenn’s house, Chad tells Abigail that Gwen claims to be Jack’s daughter and that she’s the one that drugged her. At the Salem Inn, Jack and Jenn are shocked when a vengeful Gwen tells them that her mother was Tiffany Rizczech, a cocktail waitress that Jack slept with in Chicago (before moving to Salem). She claims that he sent Tiffany checks, but they stopped when her mother died. Jack swears that the name is not familiar and he doesn’t remember her; also, he never sent any checks. He thinks Tiffany was lying to Gwen. Gwen, very upset, thinks he’s the one who’s lying. She brings up his past as a rapist and once again vows to destroy their family. She orders them out and then sits in her room, crying. Gabi sees Chad at the DiMera mansion. He apologizes for accusing her of drugging Abigail; he tells her that Gwen did it.

Hope and Thomas go back to the cottage to talk more privately. She confirms that he heard right: Liam cheated on her with Steffy, and she might be pregnant with his child. Thomas can’t believe it and is supportive to Hope. He tells her that he saw Finn and Steffy discussing something intense at work; he guesses that this is what they were talking about. Hope is filled with doubts now about Liam. Hope is angry and hurt that Liam destroyed their family. Thomas is having trouble dealing with all of the information and feels bad for Hope. She doesn’t want to hear that he was right – that Liam would let her down and always go back to Steffy. Thomas tells her that he’s not saying that. He wishes that Liam had come in and confronted him and the mannequin. Thomas feels like it’s his fault, but he cares about Hope. He knows Liam made a terrible mistake and he was an idiot. He tells her that Liam loves her and doesn’t want to lose her or their family. He advises her to take it one step at a time, with Liam. He suggests that she should give Liam another chance. Meanwhile, Liam works at Spencer, but he’s in a foul mood. Wyatt and Flo walk in and find him yelling at someone over the phone. Flo leaves them alone, so Liam tells Wyatt what happened. Liam is so distraught that he’s eating real roast beef and cheese instead of his usual vegetarian food (LOL!). Wyatt can’t believe it. Liam beats himself up about what he’s done.

Finn wants to know if Steffy wants him- or Liam – to be the father of her baby. She tells him that she doesn’t want to repeat her mother’s mistakes (with regard to Liam). She keeps apologizing for cheating on him with Liam and tells him how much she loves him and wants to be with him. She lists many of the reasons that she loves him. She tells Finn that she hopes he’s the father. She promises to be honest from now on, and he agrees. She appreciates that he says he’ll be there for her, regardless of who the father is. She asks him if he wants to commit to her like she wants with him. He doesn’t reply, so she tells him that he can leave if he wants. Finn goes to the door, like he’s going to leave, but then he closes it. He tells her that he hasn’t allowed himself to open up to anyone because he’s been so immersed in his career, till her. He believes that she won’t betray him again and he loves her. He wants a family with her. She cries with happiness as he talks about building a life with her.

Primetime TV Review of “Walker”

TV Review!

Jared Padelecki stars in "Walker" on The CW

“Walker” on The CW Review by Suzanne 1/22/21

Jared Padalecki (Sam on “Supernatural”) stars as Cordell Walker, a Texas Ranger. This is a reboot of the old series, “Walker, Texas Ranger” starring Chuck Norris, but aside from the name, the main character’s former marine service, and the Texas locale, it has little in common with that series.  They probably should have stuck closer to that formula, since that was a popular show that ran for 8 years.

This one tries to be more modern and more of an ensemble show. Although Walker is definitely the star, other characters in the show include his daughter, his son, his parents, his old partner and his new partner. Also, we see his wife at the very beginning. It’s a lot of people to get to know (or care about) in a short period of time. Padalecki doesn’t look old enough to have two teenaged children.  He is, but he doesn’t look it. It’s thin frame and his baby face worked well for him on “The Gilmore Girls” and “Supernatural,” but he doesn’t quite look tough enough or old enough for this role (even though he’s pushing 40, believe it or not).

Walker returns after a long absence following his wife’s death and an undercover job.  He has to get to know his family again, and get back to his old job. He also wants to investigate his wife’s death, which he still has questions about.

The old show relied more on action. Chuck Norris wasn’t a very good actor, but he was a martial arts expert who had appeared in a movie with Bruce Li and done quite a few of his own action films. This new show lacks action. It’s more like a regular cop show. Just judging from the first episode, it seems like they can’t decide whether it’s going to be a cop show, a mystery, or a family drama.  Shows that try too hard to be more than one thing usually don’t do well. I’ll keep watching – mainly because I like Padalecki – to see if it gets better.

WALKER

Thursday (8:00 – 9:00 p.m. ET) on The CWJared Padalecki and Mitch Pileggi in "Walker" on The CW

WALKER, a reimagining of the long-running series “Walker, Texas Ranger,” stars Jared Padalecki (“Supernatural”) as Cordell Walker, a widower and father with his own moral code, who returns home to Austin, Texas after being undercover for nearly a year, only to discover there’s harder work to be done at home. Walker will attempt to reconnect with his creative and thoughtful son, August (Kale Culley, “Me, Myself and I”) and his headstrong, somewhat rebellious teenaged daughter, Stella (Violet Brinson, “Sharp Objects”) and navigate changes with the rest of the family. His ADA brother, William “Liam” (Keegan Allen, “Pretty Little Liars”) returned home from New York and stepped in during Walker’s absence, making it all the more difficult for Walker to resume his place in the family. The perceptive matriarch of the Walker clan, Abeline (Molly Hagan, “Herman’s Head”) doesn’t hesitate to speak her mind to keep everyone in line and their traditional rancher father, Bonham (Mitch Pileggi, “The X-Files”) isn’t much for long winded, sentimental prattling, but voices his opinion when it counts most. At work, Walker’s former colleague, Larry James, is now his Ranger Captain, (Coby Bell, “The Game”) and both men need time to adjust to their new dynamic. Walker finds unexpected common ground with his new partner, Micki Ramirez (one of the first women in Texas Rangers’ history) played by Lindsey Morgan (“The 100”). She knows there’s a lot at stake for her in this new job and is quick to school Walker on curbing his maverick ways. Walker’s not Micki’s only distraction, as her relationship with an old friend, Trey (played by Jeff Pierre, “Once Upon a Time”) becomes more serious. The series closely follows Walker as he tries to balance all the new details in his old life while growing increasingly suspicious about the circumstances surrounding his wife’s (Genevieve Padalecki) death.

WALKER stars Jared Padalecki as Cordell Walker, Lindsey Morgan as Micki, Keegan Allen as Liam, Mitch Pileggi as Bohnam, Molly Hagan as Abeline, Violet Brinson as Robin, Kale Culley as Arlo, Coby Bell as Captain Larry James, and Jeff Pierre as Trey Barnett.

WALKER is written and executive produced by Anna Fricke (“Being Human,” “Valor”), and executive produced by Dan Lin and Lindsay Liberatore and Jared Padalecki. WALKER is from CBS Television Studios in association with Rideback.

Interview with “Brad William Henke”

TV Interview!

actor Brad Henke

Interview with Brad William Henke of “The Stand” on CBS All Access by Suzanne 1/15/21

It was fun to talk to Brad. I’ve watched many shows that he’s been in.

Here is the audio version of it.

Suzanne: Tell us how this role on The Stand came about for you.

Brad: The writer, the creator of the show (Benjamin Cavell) called me, and he wrote for me on Justified, and he wrote on Sneaky Pete. So, he called and offered me the role.

Suzanne: Oh, cool.

Brad: So, I got to read all the scripts, and I said, “yes,” of course. Then I had like three months to prepare, which was awesome. That’s how it happened.

Suzanne: That’s great. So, have you done so much TV work now that pretty much they just call you and offer you the role, or do you still have to audition?

Brad: I think the funny thing is, sometimes when you audition, you hear someone else already has an offer, and they don’t know if it’s gonna go through or [not]. So, I do audition, but most of the roles I get are offers.

Suzanne: Sounds like it’s a little bit like a regular job interview.

Brad: Yeah, I guess so.

Suzanne: I’m glad you mentioned Justified. I was looking at all the roles you’ve done. You’ve done some of my favorite shows like Justified and Dexter, and I remember the show you were on October Road.

Brad: Oh, you do?

Suzanne: Yeah, I watched that.

How did you prepare for acting as a developmentally disabled man?

Brad: Well, I’ve had a couple of friends – like I had someone that I knew in high school. He was two years older than me. He played football in college, and he got a blood clot in his head. After that, he was never the same. He was kind of like Tom.

Then I knew another person who was born mentally challenged, and when I was actually teaching at a junior college and coaching football, and he took my weight training class, I made him the manager of the football team, kind of like that movie, Radio. I just did a lot of things like that.

I learned the voice, because a lot of times when someone has a head injury, they learn to talk again by singing, and so I used a Dolly Parton song, “Coat of Many Colors.” It was like, “My coat of many colors – Hi! My name is Tom Cullen,” so I kind of made it so I could match that pitch. So, that’s how I kind of invented his voice.

Suzanne: Did you have to learn how to move a particular way?

Brad: I just made it so like one of my arms and one of my legs felt a little heavier, just because my character fell off the roof and was also kicked in the head. He had a head injury like that, so I just studied the effects of that.

Suzanne: How long did shooting take for The Stand?

Brad: It started at the beginning of October, and it ended March 12th.

Suzanne: Last year, right? It started in 2019.

Brad: Last year.

Suzanne: What did you like best about doing the show?

Brad: Well, I liked the producers, Benjamin Cavell and Taylor Elmore. I liked all the actors. They were really into it, and they made it fun. Angelina [Kekich], the costume designer, like everyone was just really into it, and so I really liked that. I liked being in Canada shooting it. It was really rainy and cold and isolating, and I thought that was really good for my character. I was just there with my two, fifteen year old Puggles. Some days in December the sun never even came out. It just felt good for the mood of the show.

Suzanne: Your dogs are so cute. I went on your Instagram.

Brad: Thank you. One of them is sixteen now.

Suzanne: Oh, wow.

Brad: I [saw] this kids’ movie called Soul. Have you seen it?

Suzanne: I haven’t seen it. I’ve heard about it. I haven’t watched it yet.

Brad: It’s really good. It won’t ruin anything, but when you die, your soul goes up this escalator into the sky, and sometimes I feel like he’s on that escalator. I’m like, “[unintelligible] get off the escalator.”

Suzanne: What did you like least about doing it? Was there a particular challenge that you had?

Brad: No, I loved it all. It was a challenge to play this character, because it could be simple; it could be offensive. You can really fall on your face, and that’s what I really liked about the – I don’t want to call it stress, but the [idea that] I could ruin the whole show, or I could make the show better. So, I like that feeling.

Suzanne: Did it shock you that the pandemic happened right after you guys finished shooting The Stand with a similar story?

Brad: Yeah. Sometimes I would fly back and forth, and you have to go through customs and stuff, and it takes like two hours. So, I flew back, and I only had two weeks off or something. I was basically done, but I had to shoot one more scene. I had to shoot the scene from Episode Four where I ride away on my bike. I get to Canada, and there was absolutely no one in customs. It was like a ghost town, because Canada was ahead of the US. Then I go to this hotel, and there’re like five people in it. I’m like, “I hope we did this justice.”…But then when I watched the show; I think we did.

Suzanne: Had you worked with any of the cast or crew before?

Brad: Just Ben and Taylor on Justified and on Sneaky Pete, but no one else.

Suzanne: Do you have any fun anecdotes about shooting? Any fun things that happened?

Brad: Every day was fun. A cool thing that happened, was my dogs had never been in snow before, and I was taking them one day from my my trailer to the makeup trailer, and one of my dog’s girlfriends, she just held up her paw in the air like, “I can’t do it anymore.” It was so cute. Then I picked her up, and I took her in there, and I told them what happened, and then every day they would give my dogs little hot towels on their paws. It was so cute. That was really cool, because they’re getting old, so it was kind of like our last big thing together. So, it will always be special to me in so many ways.

Suzanne: Wow, that’s nice.

So, had you read the original book or seen the other mini-series before doing it?

Brad: No. Well, I read the book after I got offered the job. I didn’t watch the mini-series, because I didn’t want to be influenced one way or the other.

Suzanne: It’s actually funny, because we saw a part of the original miniseries being filmed.

Brad: Oh, really?

Suzanne: Yeah, we were in Las Vegas, and we were staying at the Golden Gate downtown, which is right in the corner there, and this was before they had that whole canopy in Vegas with the light shows and all that. They had roped off that part of the downtown, and they had made it for their movie. So, they had a lot of the windows blacked out, and they said stuff like, “stay away” or “the virus,” whatever. I can’t remember the catchphrases. They had built all these things, and they had a giant horseshoe – like the horseshoe had fallen fallen off Binion’s in the middle of the street, and we could see them filming right below our window. So, that was fun.

Brad: That’s great.

Suzanne: Yeah, if you’re not living in LA, or you’re not in the industry, you don’t get to see those things too often, unless you just happen to be where they’re filming.

Brad: Yeah, but, you know, so many things don’t shoot in LA anymore.

Suzanne: That’s true.

Brad: This is the longest I’ve ever been in LA in years. They shoot in Canada; they shoot in Chicago.

Suzanne: Yeah, a lot of it’s in Canada, and a lot of it’s in Atlanta.

Brad: A lot of it’s in Canada and Atlanta too, yeah. I had never really worked in Canada. I shot one movie in Canada, but it’s [unintelligible], so being in Vancouver, I really really, really enjoyed.

Suzanne: Yeah, that’s surprising, I guess. It seems like everybody I talk to nowadays are filming in Canada.

Brad: Yeah.

Suzanne: So, what have you been doing during the pandemic to keep busy?

Brad: At first I worked out a lot, then I stopped that. I’m back on it this week. Got two kittens. I got a Doberman puppy, which if it wasn’t a pandemic, I would not have time to train and take care of. So, I love her, but she’s a lot of energy.

Suzanne: Yeah, I have a dog that’s about three and a half years old, and we we got her when she was three months, and I had never trained a dog before. So, I know what you mean.

Brad: I have little dogs, so you can let them get away with a little more. [Not] like with big dogs jumping on people’s legs.

Suzanne: Yeah, I understand.

Brad: I get on the couch and curl into this corner like she’s tiny or something.

Suzanne: Yeah. I have a sort of – she’s low to the ground, but she’s kind of big, fat, but small. It’s hard to explain. She’s part Corgi and part Bassett, and she still thinks she’s a lap dog, but she’s a little too big and fat to be a lap dog.

Brad: Yeah.

Suzanne: Well, I’m going to look forward to those pictures of your cats on your Instagram. Do you have any yet?

Brad: Yeah, I have one, when one cat was laying with my dogs, like, “If they do it, why can’t we?”

If I have a minute, I’m gonna start posting, because I wasn’t posting anything until the show started being on TV. I’m not that interesting. People don’t want to see me eat a salad [unintelligible].

Suzanne: So, I read that you gained a lot of weight and then lost it for your roles. What was your secret? What did you do to lose the weight again?

Brad: To lose the weight, I ate five tomatoes a day, because they have – it begins with an “L.” It has something –

Suzanne: Oh, lycopene?

Brad: Yes, and that will help you lose weight. Actually, Henry Zaga, who played Nick told me about this, because he went to like the Hollywood – because he lost a lot of weight. And I would drink a glass of water and a tomato five times a day, and then that makes you not as hungry.

Suzanne: And that’s all you ate?

Brad: You know, pretty much, but I wasn’t that hungry. I mean, like if you eat that before your meal, you’re not that hungry.

Suzanne: Oh, that makes sense. It’s like eating a salad, practically.

Brad: Yeah. Then, you know, for me, like whey-wise, I can gain weight easy. I was a pro football player. Not everyone can weigh 300 pounds and move around. [Gaining] it’s not hard, and losing, it feels like it’s hard to stop the train for a while, and then the train stays in one position. It’s hard to get it to go the other direction, but once it goes the other direction, with eating right and exercising like six days a week, it starts to come off.

Suzanne: Do you have anything else that you’re working on or that is coming out that you can tell us about?

Brad: No. I have a couple things that I hope that I get, but nothing that’s been going on. It’s like really, really frustrating. I don’t know what I’m going to do next. I had a couple of things that were supposed to go in – like, I started working on them in October, like, “Hey, it’s gonna go in December,” and when everything started to spike up, they’re like, “No, that’s not happening.” There’s a couple that I’m waiting on. I know there’s one that for some crazy reason, I’m the second choice, so I hope the first choice doesn’t take it.

Suzanne: Right.

Brad: [Unintelligible] but any job that I wasn’t the first choice/

Suzanne: Yeah. Well, break a leg, good luck, whatever it takes.

Brad: Whatever it takes, exactly.
