Kyle: [ Sighs ]

Summer: You look serious. Is everything okay?

Kyle: Most recent numbers for marchetti just came in.

Summer: Is it worse than we expected?

Kyle: Yeah. Last quarter was bleak. But I’m confident we can turn it around.

Summer: Good. I really want this to work out. Where do we start?

Kyle: Well, the biggest problem is with angelina’s coo, leonardo. She left all the business decisions up to him, and unfortunately, he made a lot of mistakes. So hopefully she is on board with replacing him once the sale goes through.

Summer: Actually, I just got off the phone with angelina. She just made a really big decision that opens up a whole new world of opportunities for us.

Diane: Thank you agreeing to get a cup of coffee with me before I head back to the athletic club.

Jack: We managed to get along at society. What’s a few more minutes?

Jill: Well, well, well. What have we here? I never in a million years would have expected to find the two of you together.

Jack: We had a few things to discuss. I take it this means that the launch party is over?

Diane: And I can assume the news of my resurrection preceded me, since you don’t look like you saw a ghost.

Jill: No, no, billy filled me in. Plus, I spotted you at the chancellor-winters event. I just didn’t want to interrupt nikki ’cause she was having such a good time giving you hell.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] And what, now it’s your turn? Go ahead, pile on. I’ve built up enough armor that I can handle whatever it is you want to dish out.

Jill: No, I’m not gonna rake you over the coals, because, actually, I am very impressed with how you managed to pull this off. Faking your own death so convincingly and then coming back here and facing the wrath of all these people who hate you?

[ Chuckles ] That takes more guts than actually dying.

Victor: From the look on your face, you were trying to reach victoria? Did you?

Nikki: She’s not picking up her cell. I just can’t believe she’s really gone.

Ashland: Welcome to our new home — at least for the time being.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Do you regret selling your penthouse?

Ashland: No, no, not at all. We’ll find something better. Maybe a townhouse this time.

Victoria: Hmm. Well, manhattan real estate can be a real battleground.

Ashland: Yes, it can, but we’ll conquer it together. With you by my side, we can do anything. I’m just so happy to be back here in this city with the woman I love, charting a whole new course for our lives, just you and me.

[ Chuckles ] Wow. It’s so rare to see you scared of anything. But this scares you, doesn’t it?

Sally: You did it. This is all yours now. The lows of bipolar depression

Diane: You’re right. Coming back here did take guts. The people in this town can be brutal.

Jill: Well, not that you didn’t deserve it.

Diane: Don’t get me wrong, i have deep remorse about my actions, and I — I don’t take any pride in having deceived so many people, especially my son.

Jill: Hmm. Well, take this advice — take whatever kind words you can get from wherever you can get them, okay? Because for many years, I had so much dirt hurled at me. I know what it’s like to be on the receiving end, okay? And it’s very hard to get past that, although for some people, it seems remarkably easy.

Jack: Oh, I can assure you — and diane knows this — I am far from being past everything she’s done.

Jill: Okay, listen, I didn’t really bring this up too much with you earlier ’cause it wasn’t the time or the place, but I have to ask you — how close are you really to this resurrected diane jenkins?

Diane: [ Scoffs ] Jack is barely tolerating me these days. He agreed to meet up with me so we could discuss some of my insecurities and questions about our son.

Jill: Okay, but you have to admit that anyone would be surprised to walk in here and see you having coffee —

Jack: It’s a process, jill. Diane wants to be reconnected with kyle, and I have decided not to get in her way.

Diane: And I thoroughly appreciate that.

Diane: [ Laughs ]

Jack: What? What’s so funny?

Jill: Oh, I was just imagining our younger selves at this moment. I mean, we’re being so mature and so civilized, right? That wouldn’t have been the case. There would be drinks hurled. There would be accusations thrown.

Jack: Yeah, you’re probably right about that.

Jill: And you two, you were like fire and ice, right? But now, you’re turning the page, you’re entering a whole new chapter. I guess that’s what happens when you’ve been through everything we’ve been through. I mean, it comes full circle, yes?

Jack: My, haven’t we become the philosopher?

Jill: Well, at this stage of my life, I mean, I just — it’s just foolish to hold grudges, isn’t it? To carry around hate, all that negativity. It can you eat you alive. We can’t change the past, so we might as well try to change ourselves, right?

Summer: Once the sale goes through, angelina wants to step down. The pressure has really been getting to her these past few years, and she’s afraid that she’s on the verge of burning out completely. She wants to take advantage of the sale and retire.

Kyle: What?

Summer: She’s ready to walk away.

Kyle: I — dad and I were wondering how our business styles would mesh, but now that she’s out of the picture, I —

Summer: The business is gonna be completely in jabot’s hands. We won’t have to run anything by angelina or worry about competing visions. She says that she trusts me implicitly not to tarnish the marchetti brand.

Kyle: Wow. That’s pretty high praise coming from someone so renowned in the fashion world.

Summer: Well, I’ve gotten to know her tastes, and I intend to make sure that the line continues to reflect her sensibilities.

Kyle: That’s what marchetti’s customers will want.

Summer: And this should help with our coo problem. We’ll be able to replace him without worrying about what angelina thinks.

Kyle: Hey, maybe you should take over.

Summer: I have no interest in the business side of the company. I’m perfectly happy being creative director. But it does mean that we’ll need to find a leader who has an excellent background in business and who can manage a large team.

Kyle: Yeah, and we need to start thinking about that person asap because once this sale goes through, we need someone who will hit the ground running. I know a couple of good executive search firms we can call.

Summer: No need to call anybody because I already know the perfect person to run marchetti.

Kyle: You do? Who?

Summer: My brilliant husband.

Sally: This is my first time in the inner sanctum. I have to say, I’m impressed. But you’re definitely gonna have to do some redecorating. Starting with that. Should we have a painting commissioned of you?

Adam: It’s not my style. Frankly, I think I would be a little uncomfortable staring at myself all day.

Sally: Why? Trust me, it is a nice view.

Adam: Hey, if I would like a face that I enjoy looking at, i would have to get a portrait of you.

Sally: Well, I am flattered, but you might confuse your visitors about who’s actually in charge.

Adam: Alright, well, how about a nice piece of modern art? You know, a little something abstract that doesn’t send any messages.

Sally: Well, I don’t care if it’s dogs playing poker as long as it is not your gloating sister.

Adam: Mm. Well, I think I could get behind something deliberately tacky for fun, but not that. Dumb animals playing poker — that would just remind me of billy.

Sally: Yeah, definitely don’t want to be thinking of him when you’re closing deals.

Adam: Although telling him about the promotion was a highlight of the launch. For once, the guy was speechless.

Sally: I wish I could’ve been there to see it. But I will be around for all of your triumphant moments from now on. So, mr. Ceo, what is your first move gonna be? Well done. And welcome to a whole new era of newman enterprises. (Becky) I started smoking when I was 16.

Victor: We always knew she was determined to leave with ashland locke.

Nikki: I know. It’s just that we left things on such a bad note.

Victor: Adam thinks that it’s a sign of weakness that she’s so easily succumb to ashland locke again.

Nikki: Well, this didn’t happen in a vacuum. I think we pushed her too much. I mean, with enough pressure, even the strongest person can break.

Victor: I disagree with that. We have always done what we thought was best for her.

Nikki: And I think that was the problem.

Victor: Why?

Nikki: She’s an adult. How much longer did we expect her to allow us to treat her like a child?

Victor: Forever, okay? She’s our daughter and always will be. We didn’t push her to do a damn thing. All we wanted is for her to accept the fact that ashland locke is a monster, and he will prove himself to be that again and again, over and over.

Ashland: [ Sighs ] I understand how scary this is for you. I do.

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

Ashland: I mean, you have just taken A…a huge life-changing step away from your family, a family that you have been so close to on so many levels for your entire life.

Victoria: It’s not the first time that I’ve left them. I once moved to italy for a whole year. I didn’t speak to any of them.

Ashland: But this is different. You also walked away from the top job of one of the biggest conglomerates on the planet. Now, that took a lot of courage, but it had to be scary, too. I can still remember when i walked away from my family all those years ago. And how desperate I was to get away from my father, to escape him. But it wasn’t easy. I can still remember the terrible feeling I had in the pit of my stomacH.

Victoria: I have to admit, it is a bit unsettling.

Ashland: Victoria, it’s gonna take time for you to adjust to this new life. But think about this — what a life it’s going to be.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ] We’re gonna take this city by storm.

[ Laughs ] We’re gonna go to big parties with fascinating people and go to museums and art galleries and the best restaurants in town, and we’re gonna have a beautiful new home with a view from the bedroom window — I don’t know — maybe overlooking the park or something, you know? Something that people would kill for. And, of course, a couple of extra bedrooms for the kids when they come to visit when school’s out. Maybe… maybe even harrison will be able to come and visit us someday. I don’t know.

Victoria: That sounds wonderful.

[ Both laugh ] I know — I know that the kids will love central park.

Ashland: They will. And think about this whole new business we’re gonna build — something new and innovative, something jaw-dropping. Something that will rival newman enterprises, believe me.

[ Chuckles ] We are going to be their worst nightmare.

Jack: Well, thank you for your pearls of wisdom, jill. I would love to stay and share stories of our spiritual growth, but it’s late and I have to get home.

Jill: Oh, no, diane, wait. Come on, it’s not that late and I’m not the least bit tired. So why don’t we stay and chat a little bit? I don’t get into town that often, and I would love to pick your brain a little bit.

Diane: About what?

Jill: I’ve always been fascinated by a really good back-from-the-dead story.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] You do realize I’m not a vampire or zombie, right? I didn’t actually die, so i don’t think there’s anything to talk about.

Jack: I was just about to offer diane a ride home to the gcac, where she is staying.

Jill: I get why you might have some trepidation, okay? But please remember that i didn’t make the list of suspects in your murder.

Diane: [ Sighs ] Why give your family just any eggs

Jill: I’m so glad you decided to stay.

Diane: Mm.

Jill: Thank you for keeping me company. Although, I have to admit, there are very few people in this town that would be willing to be seen with you in public besides me.

Diane: Uh, well, I appreciate your frankness, so I have a question for you.

Jill: Please.

Diane: I get the sense that this invitation is about more than tea and catching up. Am I right?

Jill: Oh, I’ve got to hand it to you. Death has not diminished your intuition.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] Should I be afraid there’s some poison in my cup?

Jill: No, no poison in your cup. But…

Diane: Ah, how did I know there was a “but” coming?

Jill: Well, I told you i don’t hold any grudges against you. That’s probably not true for everyone, and although I don’t get back to genoa city that often, I am fiercely protective of my family and my friends.

Diane: If you’re implying I’m some sort of threat, they have nothing to fear from me.

Jill: Well, in the spirit of our continuing frankness, most people in this town considered you to be kind of a nuclear bomb waiting to go off. But in spite of that, you seem determined to stay. So, please, I have to ask you — what are you after?

Kyle: You want me to step down as co-ceo of jabot and come over to marchetti?

Summer: What I’m suggesting is that you step down and take over marchetti as sole ceo. You would be the one in charge. You wouldn’t be co-running it with anyone else like you do with jack now.

Kyle: Yeah, but I can’t just abandon my job.

Summer: You wouldn’t be abandoning anything. We’d all be working for the same company. Look, I know that this is a big ask, but this would be my dream come true. Just think — we’d be working together again like we did at jcv. We were a great team. We could duplicate that magic at marchetti.

Kyle: We were pretty magical, weren’t we?

Summer: Just imagine what we could do on a much larger scale. Marchetti is a huge get for jabot.

[ Sighs ]

Kyle: I’m flattered you’d even think of me for this, but i have to give it some thought. It’s a big decision, and I need to talk it over with my dad, of course.

Summer: Take all the time that you need.

Kyle: But don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of us working together again.

Summer: I realize that I’ve sprung this on you out of the blue, and there’s a lot to consider. Or you could pitch it to your dad right now.

Jack: What’s going on?

Sally: So, how does it feel to be back where you belong? Top dog at your family’s cherished company, the pinnacle of your success.

Adam: You know, it feels pretty damn good.

Sally: [ Chuckles ]

Adam: Hey, thank you for coming here with me at this late hour.

Sally: I completely get why you wanted to. You deserve a moment to soak it all in before you take over the reins tomorrow morning.

Adam: I just — I love how well you can read me.

Sally: Well, I think we’ve already established that our minds have melded.

Adam: Oh, then you should already know what I’m thinking — now that we’ve done a little redecorating, I think we need to celebrate.

Sally: That just proves how in sync we are because I am way ahead of you.

Adam: Wait. I already brought you champagne for your promotion as ceo of newman media.

Sally: Okay, well, what’s good for the goose is even better for the gander.

Adam: Fair enough.

Sally: The way I see it, you can never have too much of a good thing.

Adam: Not tonight we can’T. We deserve to revel in this because we have finally got everything that we wanted.

Victoria: So this is what you meant when you said dining in one of the world’s finest restaurants. Kind of expected something grander than takeout from your favorite hole in the wall. Although it does remind me of our first trip to new york together.

Ashland: Okay, well, this is one of the best restaurants in new york. It just so happens that their cuisine comes in a brown paper bag is all.

Victoria: I’m not gonna argue with that. This looks amazing.

Ashland: Well, it is. Listen, I do have some, uh… some ideas for our new venture. I don’t like wasting time. I know you don’t like wasting time either.

Victoria: True. True, but I — I have some very strong opinions of my own about what our next move should be.

Ashland: Oh. Excellent. Let’s hear them.

Victoria: Well, first and foremost, I don’t want the name newman anywhere near our new company. So what’s going on?

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Victor: I know you’re still worried about victoria’s decision to leave, but she will not stay under his spell for long, I promise you.

Nikki: That’s what we thought when she found out he was lying about his illness. She didn’t leave him then. And I’m afraid she never will.

Victor: Well, don’t you worry, okay? I don’t think this whole “I’m in love with him” delirium will last. She’ll realize that he’s a monster. He’ll prove it to her again and again, and then she’ll come back, maybe with regrets, but she’ll come back.

Nikki: I wish I had your confidence.

Victor: Why don’t you have confidence in our plan? When she realizes that I’ve put adam back in the position to run newman enterprises, trust me, it’ll light a fire under her and she will be back.

Nikki: Well, I did approve of the plan, but the more I think about it, the more I’m afraid she’s just going to look at it as some kind of manipulation, and that’s what drove her away in the first place.

Victor: But it will have its desired effect.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] I don’t know. I mean, ashland is still such a big part of her heart, and a feeling like that doesn’t go away overnight. It seems like he’s the only one that she trusts or confides in, and that is going to make it that much easier for him to strengthen their bond.

Ashland: Well, given everything you’ve just been through, I can certainly understand why you don’t want the newman name associated with our new venture. We’ll figure that out. What else you got?

Victoria: [ Sighs ] I want for the company to be focused.

[ Clears throat ] And I would love to slap down adam and his newman media division, so I think that a media entity is definitely the way to go.

Ashland: I have a lot of connections in that area. We can start there. In fact, we might even be able to poach some of our former colleagues from what used to be newman/locke, and that would be an excellent way to stick it to both adam and victor.

Victoria: But I would like to do something, then, more than just a, you know, your standard media enterprise. I’d love to somehow be able to use my art background. You know, find a way to bring the fine arts into the digital age.

Ashland: Oh, I love the sound of that. It’s innovative, it’s fresh.

Victoria: My father, he will probably hate the idea, but I’m telling you right now, it is a load off my shoulders to say with 100% certainty that I do not give a damn what he thinks.

Ashland: I love hearing you say that.

Victoria: I know that I’ve said it before, but I mean it now more than I ever have. I’m finally outside of his shadow, and I am free to make my mark on the world. And believe me, it will be indelible.

Jack: If angelina marchetti retires, that would open all kinds of new doors for us.

Kyle: It would open a slot at the top of marchetti. A slot I’m thinking of taking.

Jack: Wait, really?

Kyle: It could be a real opportunity for me. I would have complete autonomy and a chance to make a mark solely on my own. I — I know you’d be proud to see me do that.

Jack: Of course I would. I just had no idea you would consider leaving your seat as co-ceo.

Kyle: I hope you don’t take this the wrong way. You know how much working together means to me.

Jack: It means the world to me, as well. Look, I could not be prouder that you are in such demand, and angelina deciding to step out of the picture provides a perfect opportunity for you to fly solo, a move I am absolutely convinced you are ready to make, but on the most selfish level, I don’t want to lose you at jabot.

Summer: Well, you wouldn’t really be losing him. He’d just be running a different division under the corporate umbrella.

Kyle: Yeah, well, I haven’t made up my mind. It’s just something I’m considering. Fortunately, I don’t have to make a decision tonight.

Jack: Yeah, I always say big decisions like this, it’s a good idea to sleep on them.

Kyle: Mm, speaking of big decisions, how did the chancellor-winters event go tonight? It must’ve gone pretty late if you’re just getting home now.

Jack: It was a spectacular launch, and they are going to give the competition a real run for their money. I’m telling you, this company is going to be a force to be reckoned with.

Kyle: Mm-hmm.

Summer: Sounds like quite the launch.

Jack: I wasn’t just at the party. I actually had a very pleasant dinner with diane.

Summer: That’s unexpected.

Kyle: I’m — I’m just glad my parents can spend time with each other and it not turn into a fight.

Summer: I bet you’d have rather gone out with my mom.

Jack: Phyllis has always been a great dinner companion.

Summer: That’s not quite a yes.

Jack: Well, phyllis is out of town, so it’s not an option, right?

Summer: What aren’t you saying? Just tell me — what happened between you my mom and diane and between you and my mom?

Diane: I am only after one thing. I am staying in genoa city to be close to my son, period. And I am putting up with all the threats and harassment from my many enemies in town for the privilege.

Jill: Come on, diane. You’re always playing an angle.

Diane: No, that was the old me. The person I am now would do anything to make up for the lost time I have with kyle. It’s not going to be easy, but I’m willing to sacrifice whatever it takes. You know, surely you must understand. Didn’t you have similar issues with your own son — lost years when billy was growing up?

Jill: No, no, no, that was a totally different situation. My son did not grow up thinking I was dead.

Diane: There it is again.

Jill: Look, I understand that you love kyle. You love your son. But it still seems like there’s something else. It seems like there’s something else you want going forward.

Diane: I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Jill: Well, correct me if I’mwrong, but I thought I detected a twinkle in your eye every damn time you looked at jack. (Vo) it’s yoooopllllaaaitiimmeee!!!

Diane: I mean, why would i want to complicate things by dredging up some romantic history with jack?

Jill: Ah, but, see, it didn’t look like history, the way you were hanging on his every word earlier.

Diane: Well, I —

[ Sighs ] Okay, I won’t deny a certain connection with jack. We do go way back, and we share a son, no matter how we feel about one another. But I’m sure you also noticed how jack is treading very carefully around me.

Jill: Yeah, but we’re not talking about jack’s inclinations. We’re talking about yours. Do you know he is probably the most eligible bachelor in the whole northern hemisphere? The man is charming and debonair, handsome, suave, rich, powerful. I mean, look, he checks off all the boxes.

Diane: Wow. All this intense interrogation. I wonder where it’s coming from, jill. Maybe you’re the one with your eye on jack.

Jack: All I’m gonna say is phyllis and diane are never gonna make peace. And that’s just the way it is.

Summer: But I know that something happened between you and my mom.

Jack: Summer, I know you mean well. If you have any further questions, run them by your mom. You know what? It’s late. I’m gonna turn in. I’ll see you in the morning.

Summer: Okay, it’s not just me, is it? You feel it too, right? What the heck is going on with our parents?

Kyle: It’s pretty obvious something happened between them, and it has to do with my mom, but if dad doesn’t want to talk about it, that’s his prerogative. And clearly phyllis doesn’t want to share either.

Summer: Okay, I get that our parents aren’t obligated to tell us every detail of their lives, but clearly something is wrong, and this tension is affecting the entire family. Look, I want to celebrate all of the good things that are happening to us, but then there’s still this dark cloud hovering over our heads.

Kyle: [ Sighs ] Please, just promise me you won’t blow this out of proportion.

Summer: We can’t just ignore our mothers’ dangerous histories. They are capable of broken bones, black mail, burning down pool houses.

Kyle: I’d like to think they’re way past that kind of behavior.

Summer: Sure, they’ve mellowed out for now, but i still can’t help but worry because anything is possible when those two get riled up.

Sally: So is there anything else I missed at the party?

Adam: Oh, there were some speeches filled with all the typical buzzwords and reporters asking the usual questions.

Sally: Yawn. To hell with the chancellor-winters launch. You becoming ceo is the blast-off that really matters.

Adam: You know what? That sounds like the perfect toast, but look, I’m out of champagne.

Sally: Wait. I have a better way to celebrate. We christened the newman media office. So we should christen this one, too. Well, that’s a fun perk.

[ Chuckles ]

Adam: I love you.

Sally: I love you.

Victor: We have a very willful daughter, and we both know where she’s got that from, right?

Nikki: Yes, we do.

Victor: Yes, and along with that goes stubbornness. That makes me afraid that she will have to crash and burn before she comes to her senses and realizes she made a colossal mistake.

Nikki: What if she doesn’t crash and burn? I mean, we can’t underestimate her.

Victor: Trust me, ashland locke will revert back to form. He’ll screw up again. Leopard doesn’t change his spots.

Nikki: Yeah, but we can’t count her out. She could be successful without him. I mean, with her talent and drive, she can do anything she wants. And then, if he betrays her again, she could kick him to the curb and still find great success and happiness without ashland and without her family. You love rich, delicious ice cream.

Kyle: Our mothers are a combustible combination. We should stay vigilant, but what else can we do? With our moms in different states, we should take advantage of the opportunity to relax.

Summer: My mom is going to come home eventually, and she is not going to be a happy camper if she finds jack taking diane out to late-night dinners.

Kyle: Okay, what do you want me to do? You want me to discourage my dad from being nice to my mom?

Summer: Of course not. You can’t do that.

Kyle: Well, hey, I know it’s not ideal that our mothers can’t stand each other, but we don’t get a vote in their lives or futures any more than they get a vote in ours. I think we sit back and let it all play out.

Summer: Okay. I guess you’re right.

Kyle: Meanwhile, I have a big decision to make. So how about we focus on our futures? ‘Cause from where I’m standing, it’s looking pretty phenomenal.

Diane: You have your own romantic history with jack. Someone hearing you sing his praises and question my intentions could easily assume that you have your heart set on a reconciliation yourself.

Jill: Now, see, there is a brilliant deflective technique. But you and I both know that i am not after jack. You, on the other hand, have many, many motives to want him back.

Diane: What motives? Could you please explain yourself?

Jill: Okay. Imagine yourself on jack’s arm. That would go a very long way to convince people in this town that you are worthy of forgiveness. If jack abbott, who has every reason to hate your guts, would pardon you for all of your sins, well, you’d be sitting pretty, wouldn’t you? From my perspective, that would be a masterful move. And you are the master of masterful moves.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] I don’t play those games anymore.

Jill: Hang on, hang on. As one former conniver to another, if jack were to say to you, “let’s give it another try,” would you say no?

Diane: Okay, if someday, somehow, something like that would happen [Sighs] I’d be a fool to turn him down.

Ashland: I think we deserve a toast, huh? I mean, look at us. We survived.

[ Laughs ] We’re still together against all odds, and here we are in this beautiful city, making a whole new plan to take the world by storm. I — everything just seems new somehow, and without your family and my past actions weighing us down, we’re finally — we’re finally free. Okay.

[ Clears throat ]

Victor: Do you really think i would ever allow our daughter to slip away?

Nikki: You have another plan in mind, don’t you? Something besides making adam ceo.

Adam: To newman enterprises.

Sally: To us. And our amazing new future.

Victor: I am simply waiting for ashland and victoria to make their next move. And when that happens, I will have more cards to play against ashland locke. Cards that will destroy that son of a bitch once and for all. Cheers.

Nikki: Cheers.
