“Black Bird,” a gritty, suspenseful six-episode psychological thriller developed and executive produced by Dennis Lehane, that will premiere globally with the first two episodes on Friday, July 8, 2022 on Apple TV+, followed by one new episode weekly every Friday. The series is adapted from the true crime memoir “In with the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption” by James Keene and Hillel Levin. Inspired by actual events, when high school football hero, decorated policeman’s son and convicted drug dealer Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison, he is given the choice of a lifetime – enter a maximum-security prison for the criminally insane and befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), or stay where he is and serve his full sentence with no possibility of parole. Keene quickly realizes his only way out is to elicit a confession and find out where the bodies of several young girls are buried before Hall’s appeal goes through. But is this suspected killer telling the truth? Or is it just another tale from a serial liar? This dramatic and captivating story subverts the crime genre by enlisting the help of the very people put behind bars to solve its mysteries. In addition to Egerton and Hauser, “Black Bird” stars Sepideh Moafi, Greg Kinnear and Ray Liotta. Promo

The Doctor Blake Mysteries next month. The original, period murder mystery series, stars one of Australia’s favorite, most versatile actors – Craig McLachlan – as the maverick town doctor Lucien Blake, an impulsive risk-taker who’s not afraid to upset the status quo. Created by George Adams and Tony Wright, the first season of The Doctor Blake Mysteries will begin airing on Ovation TV on Thursday, July 7 at 8am ET. With four episodes airing back-to-back every Thursday, season two will then begin airing on Thursday, July 21 at 11am ET. It’s 1959. Dr. Blake has returned to this place he once called home, to take over his dead father’s medical practice. Everything seems peaceful on the surface, but seething underneath are the age-old passions of a regional town clashing head-on with the tension and fears of the decade to come. Haunted by the horrors of war, his own personal loss and changed by his experiences as a POW, the wry, dry, yet very human Dr. Blake undertakes his other role as Police Surgeon with precision and gusto – yet many find his unpredictable and unconventional manner unnerving. Ahead of his time, Blake looks to the science of forensics and his own understanding of the human heart and mind to help solve the mysteries that inevitably come his way. Set in the gothic gold rush town of Ballarat, the wealth that built its grand architecture is long gone – but not the mysteries, murder, and deceit that linger beneath the surface of its faded glory. Beside Blake, helping and at times hindering, are his housekeeper Jean (Nadine Garner); her nephew Danny (Rick Donald), a young Constable; District Nurse Mattie O’Brien (Cate Wolfe); and Chief Superintendent Matthew Lawson (Joel Tobeck). 20/20 – Airing Friday, July 08, 2022 (9:01 PM-11:00 PM EST) on ABC. – After Brian Laundrie’s Notebook Murder Confession Became Public, ‘20/20’ Reports on the Latest Details of Gabby Petito Case, Including Civil Suit Petito Family Filed Against His Parents
‘20/20’ Airs Friday, July 8 (9:01-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC
Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie captured national attention when the two left for a cross-country adventure, sharing their seemingly happy world via social media, but only Laundrie returned. Laundrie went back to his family’s Florida residence, without his fiancé, and Petito’s family demanded answers about her whereabouts. When Laundrie vanished, the attention intensified as internet sleuths who helped crack the case wide open investigated and theorized, garnering over 1 billion views on TikTok for #GabbyPetito. A two-hour “20/20” reports on the horror that unfolded in the beauty of Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park, the search for Laundrie and eventual discovery of his remains. Authorities determined Laundrie killed Petito and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. On the heels of Laundrie’s family’s attorney releasing Brian’s notebook where he admits to killing Petito, the program also reveals new details about the civil lawsuit the Petito family filed against Laundrie’s parents and gives an update on the ongoing efforts of the Gabby Petito Foundation. The program also includes interviews with Jim Winder, former Moab, Utah, police chief; experts on body language; and legal analysts, who discuss the viral body camera footage from the couple’s police stop in Moab, days before Petito disappeared; Miranda Baker, a young woman who gave a hitchhiking Laundrie a ride in Wyoming; Jenn Bethune, who found the couple’s missing van and called the FBI; Jason Jensen, a private investigator and co-founder of the Cold Case Coalition who searched Grand Teton National Park with his cadaver dog; and Mykel Hawke, a retired special forces combat veteran and survival expert who takes “20/20” cameras through the dangerous swamps of the Carlton Reserve in Florida, where authorities found Laundrie’s body. The program dives into why the Petito case went viral and the outcry for the same attention to be applied to the cold cases of others – especially people of color and Indigenous women who have disappeared in the same area as Petito. “20/20” airs Friday, July 8 (9:01-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC.
