Nate: [ Sighs ]

Nate: Trust me, the only thing that’s going on between me and victoria is business. I admire her, the way her mind works, her business acumen. Look, I am learning a lot from her, and I won’t deny that we work well together. I-I don’t understand why we have to go through this again.

[ Cellphone touches bar top ]

Victoria: Right now I need as much information as possible so that I can make my move, ’cause information is power. And power — power is control.

Nate: And you like having control.

Victoria: It’s every bit as important to me as money, if not more so.

Nate: [ Breathing heavily ]

Nate: [ Sighs ]

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Tucker: Adam.

Adam: Hey.

Tucker: [ Grunts ]

Adam: Hey. Um, can I buy you a drink?

Tucker: Hmm, it’s an interesting offer.

Adam: It is? I, um — I didn’t mean it to be interesting. I just, uh, wanted somebody to drink with, you know.

Tucker: Actually on the upswing these days. If you’re looking for someone to commiserate with, you got the wrong guy.

Adam: Do you want a drink or not?

Tucker: Uh, I’ll have a bourbon, neat, please. Thanks.

Adam: So, is, uh, one of the things on the upswing you selling mccall?

Tucker: [ Sighs ] You’re not much of a small talker, are you?

Adam: Well, word on the street is, your company is for sale.

Tucker: Word on the street? Ah. You and I must be hanging out on different streets. Where’d you hear that? Thank you.

Adam: Well, you know, I keep my, uh, ear to the ground.

Tucker: Hmm. Your sister and dad told you, right? I didn’t know you were in the newman inner circle these days.

Adam: Yeah, we’re, um — we’re tight. We’re — we actually, um — we’ve never been closer.

Tucker: Hmm. I’m sure. You relish your role as the black sheep of the family, don’t you? Having plunged a dagger into your dad’s heart by going to work for jack abbott, I can’t imagine that put you on his good side. Frankly, everyone knows victoria’s distaste for you. So, honestly, where did you hear this?

Devon: Thank you so much for getting this food. I didn’t realize how hungry I was.

Abby: I didn’t want you to starve to death. I know you. And I know that you’re not gonna take a break, so I had to come over here and force you to take one with just a few of your favorite things.

Devon: Hmm. Are you talking about you and dominic?

Abby: Well, I was referring to the empanadas, but, yes, us too.

[ Chuckles ]

Devon: No, they were delicious. But nothing beats spending time with you and our little guy. Just looking into his face always puts things back into perspective. So I appreciate you bringing him over here.

Abby: Well, he loves you, and you certainly wore him out, because he has not made a peep since you put him down.

Devon: I — right.

[ Both chuckle ] I know. He’s always been a good sleeper, though. I just love this age and getting to see the world through his eyes, ’cause it’s like you’re discovering everything for the first time. You know?

Abby: Doesn’t it make you want to be a kid again?

Devon: No.

Abby: No?

Devon: It’s not — not me. No. But today did remind me of why I’m fighting so hard to get my company back and why I’m considering buying mccall, because it’s not for me at all. It’s for our son’s future.

Abby: Look, I — I know where you’re coming from, but you don’t have to wrestle back your company for dominic. Who knows? He might not even want to be a part of the business when he gets older. He’s going to be his own person, create his own career, his own path.

Devon: Yeah, I know. I know. And I would never force him to do anything he doesn’t want to do. But I just mean, I want him to be proud of me. You know, I want him to be proud that I’m fighting to protect the family legacy.

Abby: Well, he is gonna be proud of the man you are, no matter what. I promise you that. And look, I hate to segue back into business, but are you still considering buying mccall? I’m jonathan lawson

Nick: I came down to see if I could catch vick. She still around?

Nate: I’m not sure. We finished up a while ago. You know, I don’t always know where she is or what she’s up to, right?

Nick: Yeah, nate. I’ll call her later. Where are you headed to?

Nate: It’s personal information. I like to keep it that way. But elena and I had an argument earlier. That’s why I decided to come out, you know, have a drink and clear my head.

[ Clears throat ]

Nick: Interesting. When I saw you earlier, you made it seem like you came to meet with vick to talk about the mccall deal.

Nate: Yeah, that’s how i clear my head these days — scotch and strategizing about newman media. Business is sometimes a good distraction from your personal life. You know?

Nick: And vice versa.

Nate: Anyway, I’m too tired to face what’s waiting for me at home, so I thought it’d be a good idea if I give elena and me some space and crash here for the night.

Nick: Well, good luck with that.

Nate: It’ll be fine. Good night.

Nick: Good night.

[ Elevator door closing ]

Devon: I told tucker that I knew about him offering his company to newman first.

Abby: Mm. And did he have an explanation?

Devon: He did, yeah. And it made some sense. But the more I think about it, I realize that it doesn’t really matter that he went to newman first, ’cause he pulled that offer. As long as he’s being sincere about what he’s offering me.

Abby: Well, sincerity is always in question when it comes to tucker.

Devon: Right, right. I just — I feel like my reasons for wanting to buy the company are more important than whatever his reasons are for trying to sell it.

Abby: And what are those reasons?

Devon: Oh, just the safety-net argument. You know, in case things don’t go well with this lawsuit and getting back hamilton-winters, obviously getting the company back is my priority. But I have to be smart. You know? And I have to consider whether there’s a benefit to rebuilding a company with tucker.

Abby: Look, I know that i have been the one that was kind of pushing this whole mccall-tucker thing, but, honestly, I-I don’t know if I can fully trust tucker, and I would never want you to get burned again.

Devon: We did riff off each other pretty well when we were talking about our ideas for fixing the company.

Abby: Okay, well, I guess it’s great to be on the same page as the person running the company before you, but it’s not like you would be moving forward, working together. I mean…

Devon: Well, there’s another element to this whole thing. He said that if I were to buy the company, he’d want to come on and take an advisory role and report to me.

Abby: Wait, so, he would want to take a lesser position?

Devon: Mm-hmm.

Abby: How do you feel about that?

Devon: It’s — it’s probably a sign that he’s being honest about wanting to actually fix things between us, ’cause I know he doesn’t like to take orders from anybody.

Abby: Yeah, agreed. That’s true. Um, I guess it shows that he’s trying to form a connection. But I mean, that’s if we are giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Devon: Right. And should we?

Adam: You obviously don’t have your ears as low to the ground as I do. Um, [Inhales deeply] I’m actually no longer at jabot.

Tucker: No, I know that. Ashley told me you underperformed your way out the door there.

Adam: It wasn’t a good fit.

Tucker: The c-suite press-release lingo. Did you also quit to spend more time with family?

[ Chuckles ] Of course, that doesn’t track, because your family can’t stand you.

Adam: No, victoria, dad, and I — we have our issues, but, uh, at the end of the day, we’re family. And we always will be.

Tucker: Mm-hmm.

Adam: I know you can understand that, with everything that’s going on with devon.

Tucker: Indeed, I can. Father-son relationships are, uh, huh, complicated. Yeah.

Adam: Yeah, that’s the thing about victor me, is we — we understand each other on a cellular level because we are so much alike.

Tucker: Yeah. Yeah, you are. You’re both miserable, ruthless.

Adam: See, you, on the other hand, you are nothing like devon. You know, him being principled, thoughtful.

Tucker: [ Chuckles ]

Adam: Yeah, you really botched that relationship. It sounds like he doesn’t want anything to do with you, including acquiring mccall. Which means I might actually end up being the ceo of your empire.

[ Slaps bar top ] We should drink to that.

Tucker: Adam…

[Sighs] Over my dead body will you ever have anything to do with my company.

Nate: [ Sighs ]

[ Lock rattles ]

Victoria: [ Sighs ] I’m glad you’re here. Come in.

Nate: [ Clears throat ]

Victoria: Get you a scotch?

Nate: Listen, I, uh — I need to make something clear. I’m not, um, here for sex. I just didn’t want to be rude and not respond at all.

Victoria: Oh. So, instead, you decided to come here in person and tell me to my face that you’re not interested.

Nate: You know full well I’m interested. And that is the problem. I’m already in two committed relationships, okay? One with elena, and the other with newman media. And I’m not about to screw up either one. For copd, ask your doctor about breztri.

Victoria: [ Inhales deeply ] Do you want to sit down and talk?

Nate: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: Oh, of course. Okay, well, both feet on the ground at all times.

[ Chuckles ] This isn’t exactly great for a girl’s confidence.

Nate: As much as I’d like to throw caution to the wind — and trust me, part of me wants to more than you know — there’s a logical side of me that’s holding me back. Okay? Not only because I’m in a relationship with a woman I care about, but I would hate for this amazing connection we have at work to somehow be tarnished. I’m happier at newman than I’ve been in a long time.

Victoria: Does some of that happiness have to do with me?

Nate: Of course. I love working with you. You’re a great boss, great leader, a true visionary.

Victoria: That’s it?

[ Chuckles ] You know, the same could be said for my father.

Nate: [ Chuckles ] You look better in a dress.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

Nate: [ Chuckles ] Obviously, there are, um, other physical feelings. A lot of desire.

Victoria: How much desire?

Nate: So much… desire. But I have to rise above it, okay? We both do, for the sake of our working relationship. I’m sorry if you disagree or you think this makes things untenable for you, but I definitely think it would make things untenable if we act on our feelings. I hope you’re not insulted.

Victoria: I’m not. And I think your earnestness makes you even more attractive.

[ Inhales deeply ] You should probably go.

[ Sighs ] I’m gonna just enjoy my little nightcap alone.

Nate: Are we okay?

Victoria: Yes, of course we’re okay. I’ll see you at the office tomorrow.

Nate: [ Sighs ]

Adam: So, when you sell mccall to newman, victor, um, intends to install me as ceo.

Tucker: Hmm. Well, in that case, it’s a good thing I have no intention of selling to newman…

Adam: Hmm.

Tucker: …’Cause having you at the helm would be a surefire way to run it into the ground. And your intel about my relationship with devon is old news. I don’t know what wild promises your father is making to you, but you should know better than to fall for them. The scenario you described is absolutely never going to happen.

Adam: Hmm.

Tucker: So I would tell him and your sister to just move on.

Adam: Well, your deal with devon isn’t done yet. And there’s two things that I know about my family. One, they don’t give up and just walk away. And two, everyone has their price. And the newmans will pay that price.

Nick: Well, look at this. You boys love to hear yourselves talk so much, I’m surprised there’s any oxygen left in the room.

Tucker: What is this, a newman convention?

Nick: Just came for some takeout. Not interested at all in whatever this is.

Adam: Well, tucker was just throwing down the gauntlet, saying that newman enterprises will never get its hands on mccall unlimited, which kind of sounds like the opening of a negotiation to me. So, you know, what would it take for you to change your mind?

Tucker: Hmm. Well, devon means everything to me. And you — you mean less than nothing. So… how’s that for negotiation? Thanks for the drink. Okay?

Nick: Well, there you go. You got your answer straight from the man himself. He’s never going to let newman buy mccall. Are you ready to let this go yet?

Abby: Well, you have a lot to think about.

Devon: Hmm.

Abby: Hmm. And I love being your sounding board, but I should probably take dominic and head home.

Devon: Take dominic?

Abby: Mm-hmm.

Devon: Why you gonna do that? He’s asleep. You don’t want to wake him up.

Abby: Well, I guess I could leave him here and come get him in the morning.

Devon: I have a better idea. How about you just don’t go home.

Abby: Hmm, but I have to get up very early in the morning.

Devon: Oh, then I can wake you up very early in the morning.

Abby: Can you?

Devon: I can.

Abby: [ Chuckles ]

Devon: And you just had wine. You don’t need to be driving anywhere.

Abby: Oh, is that what you were thinking when you poured me that glass?

Devon: No. No. No, not at all. And I have so much on my mind, you know I’m gonna be lousy company for myself. I’m not gonna get any rest.

Abby: Are you suggesting that I put you to sleep?

Devon: Well, that depends on if you think you’re up to that.

Abby: I am always up to that.

Devon: You are?

Abby: Mm-hmm.

Devon: Hmm. Then be my guest.

Abby: Hmm.

[ Chuckles ]

If you, like many people,

Adam: It’s going to take more than tucker walking out of here, pouting, for me to give up on mccall. We just have to make sure that devon does not accept his offer.

Nick: Tucker wants devon to have the company. Tucker usually gets what he wants. And well, it might be harder for him to win back his son than he thinks. And if there’s one thing that I know, it’s how to work the angles on a fractured father-son relationship.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Look, adam, even if devon wasn’t in the picture, it’s tucker’s call to make. What makes you think he’s going to sell mccall to newman? I mean, he clearly doesn’t want you anywhere near that ceo chair.

Adam: Yeah, but victor does. And tucker is no match for our father.

Nick: Well, that may be, but you know who is? Victoria.

Adam: Okay, well, she’s not gonna come out on top on this one.

Nick: [ Sighs ] You know the reason you and vick don’t get along? Because you’re too much like dad. You’re both willing to fight tooth and nail for this acquisition, and then you will tear each other apart.

Adam: Yeah. I mean, so what? It — it’s our normal.

Nick: Mnh-mnh. It’s weird and it’s toxic, and you guys need hobbies. And I have no interest in being a part of another newman family drama. It’s why I’m working so hard to keep things civil between you and me when it comes to sally and the baby.

Adam: I appreciate that.

Nick: Okay. So is there any chance you could let go of this dream of running tucker’s company? Adam, you can do whatever you want. You have several high-profile options. Start your own damn company. The world is your oyster. Why does it have to be tucker’s company that will satisfy you?

Adam: Because now I have a reason to fight for it. I have a baby on the way, and i want to leave a legacy behind — a newman legacy for both of my children.

[ Sighs ]

Audra: Nate.

Nate: Hey.

Audra: What are you doing here? I thought you had a date night with elena.

Nate: She had a long day, so it was an early evening.

Audra: Listen, I still feel terrible if I caused any misunderstanding between the two of you. If there’s anything I can do —

Nate: There’s not. I cleared it up with elena.

Audra: Oh. I’m glad. Uh, then what are you doing here now and not at home?

Nate: I just had a restless night.

Audra: Then, definitely, the thing you need is coffee. Why don’t you join me?

Nate: Look, I still have a ton of work to do at home. That’s why I’m here, to fuel up.

Audra: Okay, no worries. See you tomorrow. Did you see victoria this evening?

Nate: Why do you ask?

Victor: Hello, son. Sit down. Now, you made it sound urgent on the phone.

Adam: Yeah, well, I wanted to talk to you before morning. I, um, ran into tucker tonight.

Victor: Hmm.

Adam: And he seemed awfully determined to make a deal with devon.

Victor: Well, what tucker wants and what he thinks devon will do — you know, two different things. Okay? Victoria tells me that she had a conversation with devon, who informed her that he wanted nothing to do with his father.

Adam: Okay, well, then maybe something has changed. I mean, tucker seemed pretty confident, pretty adamant that he could get devon to make him an offer.

Victor: Listen, tucker mccall has always been full of confidence. He’s been full of bull.

Adam: I just — I-I think mccall is gonna be an uphill battle, but I don’t want to let it go. Okay? I’ve gotten pretty excited about this idea.

Victor: So have I. I want it for you, and I want for the family.

Adam: Hmm. I’m not sure it’s gonna be one big happy family as you’re envisioning, but —

Victor: I’ll work that out.

Adam: Hmm. You’re gonna work out victoria’s lifelong animosity towards me?

Victor: We’ll take things step by step. And the first step is to acquire mccall unlimited.

Adam: Okay, well, the key to our success there is devon. We need to make sure that he is not interested, because tucker made it clear that he plans to sell to him, and that is his end game.

Victor: Leave it up to me. (Terrie) if you’re a smoker.

“The young and the restless”

will continue. For bathroom odors that linger.

Victor: I agree with you. I think we do need devon’s help.

Adam: Well, I think it may be more effective if you meet with him. You know, he seems to admire you.

Victor: I respect him, as well, so I’ll see what I can do. Alright?

Adam: Okay. Maybe go meet with him tomorrow morning, yeah?

Victor: To hell with that. I’ll meet him tonight.

Adam: Perfect.

Victor: Now, I’m sort of feeling that the tide is turning in my favor. I see you sort of coming back into the family.

Adam: Only under the conditions that you promised. This is not a warm and fuzzy reunion. It’s a totally selfish move.

Victor: You don’t think I know that?

Audra: I was curious where things stood with the mccall acquisition. I know victoria had some further thoughts on newman coming in with a strong offer.

Nate: Yeah, I, uh, saw her, and we talked about it.

Audra: Tell me.

Nate: I guess I can spare a few minutes, since we’re talking shop.

Audra: And I always love having the boss’s ear.

Nate: Well, victoria had a conversation with tucker, and she tried to convince him that newman was the right place to sell his company.

Audra: Was she successful?

Nate: Not sure.

Audra: Listen, I still think you can be instrumental in this deal. Why not give it a shot by talking to devon?

Nate: I don’t think that would ever work. And frankly, I don’t want to even try. Still too much anger and hurt feelings there. I want to bridge that gap eventually, but that isn’t the way. If I try to mix business with personal problems, it’s only gonna make things much worse. I need to make peace with devon slowly and carefully.

Audra: I know victoria wanted you to make inroads with devon, as well, so she’ll be disappointed. But I’m sure you can smooth that over.

Nate: I already let her know where I stand on that.

Audra: A woman like victoria can be hard to say no to. But I’ve noticed you hold your own with strong women. And victoria will get over it. Ultimately, you know, she’ll admire you for wanting to mend fences with your family, the same way I do.

Nate: Hmm. I don’t know if it’d ever work, but thanks for the talk. Guess I needed to decompress more than I thought. Well, I should get going.

Audra: Yeah. Try and get some rest. I’m sure elena’s probably waiting up for you.

Nate: Hmm.

Tucker: Well, well, well. Working late, I see.

[ Knock on door ]

Devon: [ Sighs ] Uh, just a second. Mr. Newman.

Victor: Hello, devon.

Devon: Hi.

Victor: How the hell are you?

Devon: I’m alright. Everything okay?

Victor: Sorry to disturb you so late.

Devon: It’s okay.

Victor: There’s something I need to discuss with you.

Devon: And what would that be?

Victor: Well, it’s about tucker mccall.

Devon: I heard he tried to sell you his company.

Victor: Yeah. Now, I want to know from you whether victoria was right when she said that, um, you weren’t interested in buying his company.

Devon: Well, I may be changing my mind about that.

Victor: And why is that?

Devon: Uh, it’s — it’s a complicated situation. I’m not really sure you’d understand.

Victor: Huh? Pardon me, but try me. Devon, try me.

[Sniff]

Nate: [ Sighs ] Hey.

Elena: Hey.

[ Keys jingle onto tray ]

Nate: I thought you went to bed a while ago.

Elena: I did, but I woke up and I couldn’t get back to sleep. I thought you were in for the night. Where were you?

Nate: Ah, well, after you went to sleep, I was still wired, so I decided to meet up with victoria to keep talking about the mccall acquisition.

Elena: Of course you did.

Nate: What? That’s what happened. Would it be better if I told you I went for a walk?

Elena: Are you asking me if you should lie to me? No, nate, you shouldn’t lie to me. But obviously you thought about it.

Nate: I am telling you the truth because I want you to know you have nothing to worry about.

Elena: Hmm.

Nate: Victoria and I have a work relationship, nothing more.

Elena: It’s funny. That’s exactly what I used to say to devon.

Nate: Oh.

Elena: But I guess that wasn’t entirely true. And it wasn’T.

Nate: The difference is, victoria and i aren’t doing anything. Look, she’s determined to get mccall. We had to go over all the different permutations, find the best path to bring tucker’s company into newman. She wanted to talk about it so we can cover every aspect of the deal. Okay?

Elena: Yeah. Victoria is ruthless. When she sets her mind on something she wants, she won’t stop until she gets it.

Tucker: So, were you working on acquiring my company or landing nate?

Audra: The two things don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

Tucker: Hmm. I like your new target. Much better than carrying a torch for your ex. Your quest for noah was getting quite boring, and you weren’t getting anywhere. This going any better?

Audra: It’s too early to say. Nate’s quite the catch, so I’m not the only one in the game.

Tucker: Mm-hmm. Including his girlfriend. You better be careful.

[ Sniffles ] Elena might have more teeth than she appears to have.

Audra: Elena’s a do-gooder doctor with a holier-than-thou moral code. I don’t see her as my competition.

Tucker: Hmm.

Audra: I’m actually more worried about victoria newman.

Tucker: Victoria and nate?

Audra: Not yet. And I plan to keep it that way.

Tucker: So, you’re planning to insert yourself between your boss and your boss’s boss?

[ Chuckles ] Hmm, it’s gutsy. It also seems a little shortsighted and reckless. How do you survive if you steal the man victoria newman wants?

Audra: I’ve landed on my feet after messier situations than this one.

Tucker: Yes, I can attest to that. Still, risky business.

Audra: The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward.

Tucker: And you love big rewards, don’t you?

[ Chuckles ] God, you know, it’s too bad that devon doesn’t trust you anymore. Would have been nice to point you in his direction. Could have used your help trying to convince him to take over mccall.

Audra: What makes you think I would have helped you?

Tucker: [ Clears throat ] Yeah, transactional woman. I would have offered you something that you wanted in return.

Audra: What could you possibly offer that would interest me?

Devon: So, you know that I’m trying to get back control of hamilton-winters.

Victor: Oh.

Devon: Right?

Victor: I’ve heard. And to be honest with you, I am rather saddened by the fact that there’s conflict between you and lily. I mean, I admire and respect both of you. Sad that it’s come to this.

Devon: Yeah, I’m sad that it’s come to it, too, but lily and jill have given me no choice. And I’m being forced to do this to protect the legacy of neil.

Victor: I understand the idea of protecting a legacy.

Devon: Good.

Victor: But why try to do that whilst attempting to get ahold of mccall unlimited?

Devon: Because it would be a safety net for me in case this lawsuit doesn’t go the way I want it to.

Victor: Well, let me tell you something. You’re talking to a man with a lot of experience in business. Safety nets are no good. You know why? You never fight to the very end to get what you want.

Devon: I would agree with you in most cases, but this is a very different situation, because I’m about to go up against lily and jill and the whole chancellor-winters legal team. The only thing I could propose is that if you were able to convince jill and lily to let me keep my company, I might be willing to forget about mccall altogether.

Victor: Let me see what I can do, alright?

Devon: Sure.

[ Footsteps on stairs ]

Abby: [ Sighs ] Dad, um, what are you doing here? When you have chronic kidney disease.

Victor: I’m glad we have this conversation, devon.

Devon: Yeah.

Victor: Things have become very clear to me. So I’ll see you soon. Okay?

Devon: Sounds good.

Victor: Thank you.

Devon: I’ll walk you out.

Victor: Thank you.

Devon: Uh-huh. Good night.

Abby: Well, um, that was awkward. Not the way I wanted my dad to find out about our relationship.

Devon: Our relationship?

Abby: Okay, you know what I mean. I just — I didn’t want him to find out about us — whatever this is — by me walking downstairs wearing your shirt.

Devon: I know. I know. I’m sure he was shocked by it, but, I mean, we’re not doing anything wrong. Not hurting anybody. You and chance are divorced.

Abby: Yeah. And my dad always wants me to be happy.

Devon: Well, that makes two of us. And if I haven’t told you lately how happy you make me, you need to know that. I never want to lose it.

Elena: Why are you so defensive?

Nate: Because you’re putting me in that position. You keep insinuating something is going on with victoria, and I’m trying to reassure you that is not the case.

Elena: I can see that. And the more you try to reassure me, the more worried I get.

Nate: Oh, I can’t win. I can’t win.

Elena: Well, I can’t either, nate. I hate feeling like this. I don’t want doubts creeping in my mind about our relationship, but I also tend to trust my instincts. And right now, they’re driving me crazy because I suspect something that you swear isn’t happening. Nate, I really want to believe you. And I really hope you’re not gaslighting me.

Nate: I’m not. I am committed to this relationship.

Elena: That’s an interesting way to put it. You make it sound like it’s an obligation.

Nate: Please stop. You know what? We’re not getting anywhere tonight. Let’s just talk about this in the morning.

Elena: Nate…

Nate: You are not an obligation. I am deeply committed and in love with you.

[ Both breathing heavily ]

Next week on

“the young and the restless”…

Jill: You said you had an alternative for me.

Victor: I think you will like what I have to propose.

Jack: Mamie.
