“NCIS: The Eighteenth Season” Review by Suzanne 8/15/21

Somehow, this show keeps going on and on. This is the last season where Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) leads the pack. He’s retiring and will only be seen occasionally in the Nineteenth season. Gary Cole takes over the NCIS team. The interesting thing is that Harmon is only 5 years older than Cole.

The show’s cast has gone through many changes. I believe Sean Murray (Tim) is now the only remaining regular character on the show (since it started in 2003; however, he didn’t join the show until episode 7). He came in as a very junior member of the team, so that seems really strange. I don’t think NCIS will last very long without Gibbs. The ratings have been going down steadily this season. Maybe they’ll let them get to Season 20 and stop. That would be nice.

I think the show is still plenty enjoyable because they have new regular characters and new cases. As long as you enjoy the show, does it really matter if Gibbs is till around? Gary Cole is an excellent actor and a good replacement. I think it’s hard for fans to lose Ducky and Gibbs (both retiring). The show is really still feeling the loss of Tony, Ziva and Abby.

Back to season 18. They packed a lot of great action and story into this season. There are only 16 episodes, due to COVID. There are quite a few deaths of minor characters, and another regular cast member leaves. The show always has many mysteries, twists, shootings, fighting, explosions and more. Check it out!

“Blue Bloods: The Eleventh Season” Review by Suzanne 8/14/21

This is always a good family soap opera. It’s also a cop show, but that’s incidental, in a way. The family in this show really could work anywhere. What makes the show interesting is how they relate to one another in their working-class, New York City way. Tom Selleck is the alpha male in his pack, but he’s also a loving father and grandfather.

Even after eleven seasons, they don’t seem to run out of ideas for stories. In part, that’s because the cast is so large. There’s always more to tell about the Reagan clan. They introduced a new family member this year: Joe Hill, son of the late Joe Reagan.

It’s no surprise that the show’s demographics are older and more conservative. However, the show does not shy away from discussing today’s issues, particularly those that involve the police. This season they argue about police brutality.

The DVD has deleted scenes and two features: “The Story of the Reagans: Season 11” and “Shades of Blue.” It would make a great gift for anyone who is fond of the police or Tom Selleck (especially those over 60).

Shot on location in New York City, the series has been praised for its performances, especially from Selleck, and has premiered to millions of viewers each season since it began in 2011.

I apologize for the lateness of this review…they usually send me these weeks in advance, but this one came a day late.

I love this show. Then again, I love anything remotely related to Batman. Also, Bruno Heller is co-creator of the series, and he developed the TV series “Gotham” on FOX, which I also loved. Both shows are prequels for “Batman” but have their own unique stories and twisted histories. Unlike “Gotham,” this series has very little to do with Batman. It centers on the Cold War history of Alfred, Batman’s “butler,” and Batman’s parents, Bruce and Martha. This is all original to the show, although I’m sure they were heavily influenced by both “Gotham” and the comics.

Yet this is still a fantasy show because there are public executions in London, and a secret society called The Raven Society tries to take over the British government. We know from “Gotham” that Alfred is a former SAS officer, so they’ve expanded on that quite a bit. He has PTSD in this series but runs a security firm. In this season season, he runs a black market club in Soho, and he might be moving to America soon.

The first season was very good. I’ve enjoyed this second season as well. Like the first season, it has a lot of action (violence), intrigue, and complex stories. There are many characters to keep track of, but not too many. I didn’t find it hard to follow, or boring. I love these kinds of shows.

I hope it gets a third season as well. The general theory out on the net seems to be that the show will move to HBO Max. We’ll have to wait and see what happens there.

Unfortunately, there are no features at all. That’s too bad.

This is not my kind of show. I’ve never found it funny. I know someone must have, though, because it was on Comedy Central for 6 seasons!

Hosted by comedian Derek waters, the basic premise is that celebrities pretend to be drunk and re-tell some event from history (and they act it out as well). Now, they do claim that they’re really drinking, but how much are they drinking, and how drunk are they, really? I can’t imagine most celebrities really wanting to let the public see them in a very drunken state. My guess is that they actually drink very little.

The actors are given information packets with research about a particular historic topic beforehand. Some of the parts are pre-recorded and rehearsed. Basically, the whole thing is fake in order to produce “comedy.” Which is fine if it’s funny, but it’s not. I’m sorry, but to me it’s never funny, and it’s very lame. Maybe it’s because I grew up with an alcoholic father (who took me to bars), but I just don’t find drunk people all that funny. People THINK they’re very funny when they’re drunk, but they’re not.

If you’re a fan of the show, then this set is really for you. Seasons 5 and 6 have never been released on DVD before. There are a few extras on the set as well, such as extended and deleted scenes, outtakes and sober reveals.

“Batman: The Long Halloween Part One” (Blu-ray+Digital) Review by Suzanne 6/20/20

It’s always great to see a new DC animated movie, but this one is pretty slow moving. I’m sure it was very difficult to take the very long comic book series and adapt it to a movie (or even two movies as they’ve done here). Still, there seems to be too many characters, and the pacing is a bit slow.

The movie had Batman, Alfred, Commissioner Gordon ahd his family, Harvey Dent and his wife, Selina Kyle/Catwoman, The Joker, Solomon Grundy, and a bunch of mobsters and other Batman villains. It’s just too much. They should have made it into a series instead.

Still, if you’re a Batman fan, you’ll probably love it. Just make sure you pay careful attention, and sit back and enjoy. Even though it’s a little slow, it’s still definitely worth watching. I just wish they had put the whole thing together in one DVD, rather than making us wait for the second part. However, it’s smart marketing to bring out the second part later on, near Halloween, I’m sure… since it’s a calendar-based story that goes from Halloween to Halloween. The way they’ve laid it out in two parts makes good sense to the story, but it does leave you hanging a bit.

Jensen Ackles (“Supernatural“) voices Batman; Josh Duhamel (“Jupiter’s Legacy”) voices Harvey Dent; the late Naya Rivera (“Glee”); Titus Welliver (“Bosch”) voices Falcone; and Billy Burke (“Revolution”) voices Gordon. The other actors are not familiar to me, but they’re all outstanding. Troy Baker’s Joker brings to mind both Mark Hamill’s and the late Cesar Romero’s versions. The artwork is also top-notch, of course. It’s so close to reality that you almost forget you’re watching a cartoon.

Unfortunately, there are few extras. Most of them are trailers or special features that are about other upcoming DC animated movies, or they’re previous cartoons from other Batman series that are similar to this one. The only relevant one is the features that talks about “Batman: The Long Halloween Part Two.” It’s very interesting. It looks like we’ll be seeing Poison Ivy, Scarecrow and other familiar Batman villains that we didn’t see in Part One.

I’m sure that if you read the original comic, this is all very familiar to you. I read it, but it was at least a decade ago, so I don’t remember it very well. I just remember that it was very good.

This was a very good series on Showtime. It’s what they call a “limited series,” meaning it’s just 10 episodes and there will be no more…at least, as far as we know. Anyway, Bryan Cranston stars as an upstanding New Orleans judge who has to bend or break the rules when his son gets involved in a hit-and-run.

I enjoyed the show when I saw a few episodes on Showtime, but it’s nice to have the whole series to watch. It’s very gripping and complex, and the performances are outstanding. It has a nice twist at the end. I think that this series is one that you’ll either love or hate.

Aside from a few deleted scenes, there are no extras on the DVD. That’s too bad. It would have been nice to hear interviews with the cast, writer, directors and more. Perhaps they’ll come out with a better DVD version later with all of that.

This is a truly great animated series on Adult Swim about a caveman. There is no speaking. Everything is just action, sounds, and grunts. It’s not the type of series kids should watch, though, as it is violent. It has great animation and storytelling, with a bit of fantasy. Anyone should love it.

The only feature is a behind-the-scenes interview that’s interesting to watch. Don’t miss this one, and it will be a great holiday gift as well. I can’t wait for Season 2, which should be out later this year.

“Infinity Train: Book Two” Review by Suzanne 5/20/21

This is a really cool animated show. It’s very odd but enjoyable. There’s this train, called the Infinity Train. People go on it to work out their problems. They go from room (or train car?) to room, solving puzzles to learn about themselves. It’s fantastical.

This is the second series. The heroine of the first season was Tulip, a girl trying to deal with her parents’ divorce. In this second series, the heroine is MJ, Tulip’s reflection who has fled and is trying to lead her own life, separately from Tulip. The Reflection Police are chasing her through the train. Meanwhile, she meets a mysterious deer who can change itself into various colors and shapes, and a young man named Jesse. They travel through the train to try to get through the challenges so they can leave the train (while trying to evade the police).

It’s a very unusual show. I think anyone of any age can enjoy it. You don’t have to have seen Book One to enjoy Book Two. The first two seasons aired on Cartoon Network, and the other two on HBO Max. The DVD has just a few features…nothing too exciting. Still, this would make a great gift or addition to any DVD collection.

“Beverly Hills 90210: The Ultimate Collection” Review by Suzanne 5/15/21

This is such a great collection to have. I watched many of these episodes on cable re-runs. It’s great to finally have them all together to re-watch, along with the fantastic extras. This collection also has the 2019 short-lived comedy reboot series that most of the cast indulged in. I’m glad to have that as well because I never got around to watching it, although I meant to. Who can keep up with all of the series available today on broadcast, cable, streaming and DVD? I love having the DVDs to keep so that I can focus more on watching them.

The set is split up into three sections, each with its own extra features. The first set of disks has seasons 1-3; the second set has seasons 4-7; and the third set has seasons 8-10, plus the reboot series BH90210. Each set has many great interviews, behind-the-scene features, gag reels and much more.

The only drawback, from what I’ve read, is that they had to replace a lot of the songs because they couldn’t get the rights to the original ones they used back when the show aired. Frankly, I don’t care because I don’t really pay attention to the songs playing in the background. Some fans might, though.

This would be a great gift for any fan of the show as well as anyone who loves good teen drama, or someone who’s nostalgic about the 90’s. Christmas will be here before you know it!

“Justice Society: World War II” [Blu-ray] Review by Suzanne 5/5/21

I love the DC movies, and this one did have plenty of action and adventure. The story and animation are good. However, I didn’t like that they killed off some heroes (I never like that), including one that we’ve seen killed off far too many times before in movies. Also, one of the heroes was being controlled by a villain, but after he came out of that control, he just went back to where he came from, with no explanation. I hope they make a sequel that tells us what happened with him.

Other than those things, it was a good film. I love how the Flash was working with Superman, and he went back in time (or in another universe) trying to save him. The way he worked with the other heroes was great. I loved Black Canary and Hawkman. It was great that they even managed to fit in Dr. Fate and Aquaman. The only thing I didn’t like about the animation was that Barry Allen is way more muscular than I’ve ever seen him. He was almost like Superman. The Flash is not usually so muscular.

DC Animated films don’t have a lot of DVD features. They have one behind-the-scenes feature and everything else is a previously-released episode or another movie or trailer for another movie. It’s the same here. See below for details.

If you love the DC Animated DVD’s, then you’ll probably love this one, too, as long as you don’t care about who gets killed off.

“The Undoing” [Blu-ray] Review by Suzanne 3/20/21

This is a wonderful, suspenseful murder mystery with an outstanding cast, featuring Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant, Donald Sutherland, Lily Rabe, Noma Dumezweni and more. The fine script is by TV legend David E. Kelley.

Jonathan (Grant) and Grace Fraser (Kidman) are a wealthy married doctor couple in New York’s high society. He’s a pediatric oncologist and she’s a psychiatrist. They have a young son (Noah Jupe), Henry. Their lives are destroyed when a young woman is murdered and Jonathan disappears.

There are 6 episodes, so it’s really more like a long movie or miniseries than a real TV series. Unlike “Big Little Lies,” I doubt there will be a second season. The whole suspense was about who did the murder, and we learn that at the end. I can’t imagine how they would do a second season.

Kidman plays a much stronger woman here than she did in that other HBO series. Most of the show is scene from Grace’s point-of-view, and she imagines scenes of murder or sex that she didn’t actually see.

Grant is fantastic as her lying, cheating (and possibly murderous) husband. They have great chemistry. If you like drama, suspense and mystery, you should enjoy this. Heck, it might be worth watching just to see Donald Sutherland’s very impressive eyebrows.

There are many good features on the DVD set as you can see below. They’re entertaining to watch.

“Wonder Showzen: The Complete Series” Review by Suzanne 3/10/21

This is a funny show from 2005-2006 that ran only two seasons. It’s a raunchy parody of shows like “Sesame Street,” but it’s for adults only. Some of it can be just gross. I’m sure it was shocking back then, but now it’s a little tame compared to some Adult Swim shows.

Similarly to “Robot Chicken,” it flows from one scenario to another in a haphazard manner. It’s not as funny as “Robot Chicken,” though. The series uses old stock footage as well as clips of kids, and ugly puppets, for humor.

I think that if you’re sitting around late at night with your friends, drinking or smoking, it’s probably a lot funnier.

Sadly, there are no DVD extras or features on the set. It would have been nice to hear about the development of the show and where the people in it are now. Also, there is no closed captioning, so sometimes I had trouble understanding what was being said. I had to go to Paramount+ to watch most of the episodes. It’s streaming there – with the closed-captioning.

The series was already released previously on DVDs (one for each season), and apparently the packaging was much nicer. The only reason to buy this set is if you didn’t buy it the first time around or you really want it all in one set. Since there are only two seasons, that seems unlikely.

This is a very funny animated show with extremely devoted fans of all ages. It’s never been my type of show (in part because I hate that type of animation), but I can see why everyone loves it. The humor is really edgy and hyperkinetic. It will probably make you laugh – especially if you have a fairly juvenile sense of humor.

This is a great set to have for any fan of the show because not only does it have all of the episodes, but it has many great features and extras as well. The show is currently airing season 5, so this is a great way to catch up before watching the current episodes.

“Victor and Valentino: Folk Art Foes” Review by Suzanne 2/25/21

This show airs on Cartoon Network as “Victor and Valentino.” I reviewed it in 2019. I’m not sure why they chose to name the DVD as “Folk Art Foes” rather than just, say, “Season One.” I supposed it might be due to the fact that there are 39 episodes in season one, and this disk has only 18 episodes.

Anyway, my opinion of the show hasn’t changed. I’m glad it’s very successful and that they’re working on a third season! It’s a good animated supernatural show for kids that uses historical Mexican folk lore in the storytelling.

Victor and Valentino are half-brothers who live in the small town of “Monte Macabre” in Mexico. They explore supernatural happenings, aided by the ghost of their grandmother.

Sadly, the DVD has no features or extras of any kind. That’s too bad. It would have been nice to see some kind of feature that talks about the development of the show or the voice actors behind the characters.

This is a fascinating documentary, especially for anyone who’s interested in American history, has read Wilder’s books or who was a fan of the show “Little House on the Prairie.” Laura Ingalls Wilder’s personal diaries are compared to the fictional accounts of her life (her novels). Of course, her novels are very different from reality.

I really don’t know why anyone settled in these areas of Wisconsin, Illinois, Kansas and North Dakota. Why did they think that they would survive in that weather? It’s pretty amazing. I’ve only lived briefly in that kind of weather, and it’s not for me! On the other hand, I don’t think living in the South would have been very fun without air conditioning, either.

There are also some great interviews with actors from the TV shows and with author Linda Sue Park, who wrote a “Little House on the Prairie” book, but with an Asian-American heroine. That sounds very interesting. I’ve never read the original books. I might have to read some of them now.

American Masters Explores the Cultural Legacy and Complicated History of Author Laura Ingalls Wilder in a New Documentary

Laura Ingalls Wilder: Prairie to Page presents an unvarnished look at the unlikely author whose autobiographical fiction helped shape American ideas of the frontier and self-reliance. A Midwestern farm woman who published her first novel at age 65, Laura Ingalls Wilder transformed her frontier childhood into the best-selling “Little House” series. The documentary delves into the legacy of the iconic pioneer as well as the way she transformed her early life into enduring legend, a process that involved a little-known collaboration with her daughter Rose. Directed and produced by Emmy® Award winner Mary McDonagh Murphy (Harper Lee: American Masters).

Featuring never-before-published letters, photographs and family artifacts, the film explores the context in which Wilder lived and wrote, as well as the true nature of her personality. Victor Garber (Argo, Alias, “Titanic”) narrates, with Academy Award nominee Tess Harper (“No Country for Old Men,” Breaking Bad, “Crimes of the Heart”) reading Laura Ingalls Wilder and Amy Brenneman (NYPD Blue, Judging Amy, The Leftovers) reading Rose Wilder Lane. The film includes original interviews with Caroline Fraser, who won a Pulitzer Prize for her Wilder biography; Pamela Smith Hill, author of “Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Writer’s Life” and editor of Wilder’s New York Times bestselling memoir; Wilder biographer and editor of “The Selected Letters of Laura Ingalls Wilder” William Anderson; Christine Woodside, writer of “Libertarians on the Prairie”; authors such as Louise Erdrich, Roxane Gay, Lizzie Skurnick and Linda Sue Park; and actors from the beloved TV series Little House on the Prairie, including Melissa Gilbert (Laura Ingalls Wilder), Alison Arngrim (Nellie Oleson) and Dean Butler (Almanzo Wilder).
